I've recently begun dipping my toes in the turn-based realm of fantasy games -- from Blackguards to Dark Quest II to Mordheim City of the Damned and even King's Bounty. I'm quite enjoying it, but would love to know more highlights of the genre.

Do you have favorites and/or suggestions in the genre? I'd love to hear them!
Age of Wonders,
Heroes of Might and Magic,
Warlock.

The genre is my favorite genre.
I'm currently playing Age of Wonders III. I think the third is a lot better than the older ones

The first Warlock and Warlock 2 are very similar. I slightly prefer the former, but the latter is more expanded.

Does KOTOR count?

TBH I'm not really a fan of the genre, at least not when movement points are present.
No Order:
* Fallout 1
*Fallout 2
*Battle Brothers
*Arcanum of Steamworks and Magick Obscura
* Shadowrun: Dragonfall
*Age of Decadance
*Underrail
*Realms of Arkania
* Temple of Elemental Evil
*Jagged Alliance
*Wizardry 6-8
*The Bard's Tale 1-3
*Master of Magic
*Legend of Heroes- All of them.

Also Endless Legend.

It's a mix between fantasy and sci-fi. That and Age of Wonders and Warlock are 4X strategy games.

If you like board-game or card-game, Armello is an example.
Another is Talisman, if you like such genre too.

Master of Orion 2; Sword of the Stars .. especially the last one. It owned my gaming time a few years back.
- Forgotten Realms Unlimited Adventures (FRUA) (just like the old Goldbox games but better looking and somewhat more comfortable engine, and the better custom modules have less tedious random combats) Footage (the music is not part of the game)
- Knights of the Chalice (I have some issues with how the game often shuts you in in dungeons and takes away your resting options, but the turn-based D&D style combat system is fun) Footage
- Albion (it's been a long time since I played it, so my memory is a bit fuzzy; I guess the turn-based combat system is not the most spectacular, but it's serviceable and the game itself is special and unique; it's not typical fantasy but close: your spaceship crashes onto an alien planet that is kind of a fantasy world, but not standard fare. DISCLAIMER for the sake of dtgreene: there are some arcade real-time sections in it ;) ) Footage
- The Temple of Elemental Evil (to be honest I haven't played much of it; the few storytelling there is is rather boring, but the combat is interesting; I think if this game had come with a campaign editor to build your own dungeons with story like FRUA or NWN, I'd have loved it) Footage
- Divinity: Original Sin & sequel probably (best turn-based fantasy combat ever) Footage

Not Fantasy:
- the newer Shadowrun trilogy (Footage)
- the South Park games (Footage Game 1, Footage Game 2)
- West of Loathing (the combat is not really deep, but the game is funny, Footage)

Honorable mentions: Might & Magic 3-5, Avadon series, Tales from Candlekeep: Tomb of Annihilation (more of a boardgame and not all that great, but can be fun for a while), Realms of Arkania (but you know that)

I quite liked Age of Decadence's turn-based combat. The spin-off Dungeon rats (party-based, very difficult) might also be interesting.
I also recently finished Expeditions: Conquistador, which also has fun, if pretty basic, turn-based combat.
From the few I played, I prefer (I haven't played that many):
* Heroes of Might and Magic III
* Divinity: Original Sin
* South Park: The Stick of Truth & The Fractured But Whole
* Xenonauts
* Shadowrun: Dragonfall

In my backlog, based solely on reviews, I have the following:
* Jagged Alliance 2
* XCOM: Enemy Unknown
* X-Com: UFO Defence
* Civilization IV
sid meiers colonization 94'.
openxcom
panzer general 94 but you need to find the right guide in order to get into it.
- Civilization 4 The different scenarios that can occur within the game really let your imaginations run wild.
- XCOM: Enemy Unknown Compared to the other three TBS games in this list, I have to say that the reason why I've decided to include XCOM: Enemy Unknown is because of the amount of fun I had with this game.
- Field of Glory 2 One of the most unique TBS games I've ever played.
- Worms 3D Despite the amount of patience and dozens of failed attempts that you have to put up with before finally getting a perfect shot, the game never fails to impress me through its comical presentation and the large variety of weapons that the game has in its arsenal. Not really a fan of Worms Forts however, as I feel that the number of weapons that each worm can carry with it without having to stay on top of the team's infrastructures had been reduced to only a few, forcing you to have to stick close to your base most of the time in order to be able to access the majority of weapons in the arsenal (which sucks so bad).
- Chess Although I'm not that good of a player myself, I really enjoy the puzzles that this board game has been able to challenge me with through chess websites such as chess . com, and lichess . org.

-Civilization 1, 2 and Alpha Centauri (I haven't played the other Civ games, though Civ 3 is on my backlog.)
-X-Com Ufo Defense and Terror from the Deep.
-Shadowrun Returns, Dragonfall and Hong Kong.
-Darkest Dungeon.
-Rebuild 3: Gangs of Deadsville (I think by default the game is in real time, but I always play on turn-based mode because Rebuild 1 and 2 were turn-based and I got used to it.)

Civilization 4 is the pinnacle of the genre! If i was to give you one piece of advice before playing that game it is this.... money is going to bootstomp you like nothing you ever seen in a game before (with the exception of Galactic civilizations 2)!

Other games;
Seriously turn based.....

Alpha centauri
Civ 2
Fallen Haven
Gallactic assault
Gallactic civilisations.

Fallen haven and galactic assault (prisoner of power) have a unique way of functioning that i absolutely LOVE and although these two games are similar to each other in that regard, they have nothing in common with any other game i have ever played (almost).
And its the one element that i always miss in other games.... and that element is 'reaction moves'.... reaction moves adds a whole new dimension to the term 'strategy game'.
If you dont know what a reaction move is, it is this.... units that execute a move when it is not their turn, in reaction to the moves of the player who's turn it is.
I first saw reaction moves close to 40 years ago in a game called 'Rifles' and that game remained an obsession of mine for many years!
In modern times, i never see reaction moves in turn based strategy games, i guess its 'too hard' or something??
The Shadowrun series are pretty good, but Dragonfall is the best.
