Jagged Alliance 1 & 2 are both very good games. Old-school AF, 'first read the manual' kind of games, but great nonetheless.

Here at GOG they have a lot of hidden gems, like Warhammer Chaos Gate, Silent Storm, MAX, Battle Isle, Pacific General.

toxicTom: I wish someone would make a really faithful remake of this one.
Yup but i'm careful what i wish for and rarely have i experienced truly great remakes that really captures the feel of original but if it where to really happen and be faithful then sign me up !
Master of Magic for me. Though my strategies always ended up the same - level up one or more superheroes and have them take out enemies one at a time.
Not a lot of recommendations for tactical RPGs in here, so let me suggest Fell Seal: Arbiter's Mark, available here on GOG.
Breath of Fire series, i guess...

Pokemon...

Heroes of Might and Magic series (mostly 3)...

Ah, those were the times!
I can't believe Valkyria Chronicles isn't on here yet! It's turn-based strategy, but you have to control your troops like a 3rd-person shooter. I am still playing through it, but I have enjoyed it so far.
ToEE have rich turn based combat but poor content despite some mods being made.
Arcanum? Fallout Tactics? Both play better in real-time.
Underrail. A single player with 1 character and turn-based? Madness that works.
Jeanne D'Arc from Playstation Portable was pleasant surprise.
Wizardry series, obviously. Pity it's a dead branch.
Other turn based games in handhelds - Final Fantasy Tactics, WH40k Squad Command...
Many of my fav games are already mentioned in this thread, esp Master of Magic, Heroes of MM, Temple of Elemental Evil, and Age of Wonders. So count my vote for those. However there are also a few here that I haven't tried yet and want to. Good suggestions. Thanks
Jagged Alliance 2 was already mentioned, but I would like to emphasize Battle Isle: Incubation.
Wow, thanks all! I really appreciate your time and thoughts.

As I said, I'm new to this style of gameplay and any suggestions and thoughts are welcome.
I love the Disciples series. It's a turn based strategy game series. A bit reminiscent of Might and magic.

Yes I was being sarcastic, I hate chess, It's as boring as f*ck.

kai2: I've recently begun dipping my toes in the turn-based realm of fantasy games -- from Blackguards to Dark Quest II to Mordheim City of the Damned and even King's Bounty. I'm quite enjoying it, but would love to know more highlights of the genre.

Do you have favorites and/or suggestions in the genre? I'd love to hear them!

TentacleMayor: 4X - Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth
Wargames: Order of Battle
War-focused 4X: Age of Wonders 3
Roguelikes: Into the Breach
4X - Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth - you know, that game suffered the same death sentence idea as civ5.... the 2 unit tile limit.
The idea was to get rid of stacks of doom, but they could have done that just as easily with a 3 unit limit, i could have coped with a limit of 3, but noooooew, they go and make it 2, fu--ing 2! - completely ruined both games, very sad.
