FTL in general.
Others for the moods: Stars in Shadow, Duke Nukem 3D, Monster Train.

I generally prefer some strategy in there to distract the active parts of the brain. But if I'm truly exhausted on top of it, I can autopilot Duke.

Shmacky-McNuts: Believe it or not, doing something you like while you are in the middle of a life mess. Is not a good idea. Doing something you have no interest in, is more logical.

Bad things stick in your memory better, due to the intensity of the events. It is more uncommon to be so intensely happy the same way you can get angry. Following the logic of this, you, performing a task or keeping busy with things that dont matter to you, will actually be better for your mental state.

Why? Because the things you dont care about will be associated with the anger or upset. Instead of the things you actually enjoy. So 6 months later. You arent still fixated on the crap that upset you. Because you wont be doing the stuff you had no interest in.

example:
Lets say you eat something, that is your favorite food, while angry. Every time you eat that food in the future tense, you will be reminded of the upset.
Well in my experience this is not even remotely accurate, so I don't believe you

Think what you like. People are easy to understand. Motivators are the same. The illusion of being different amongst 8 billion is humorous. :)

I will, thanks Doctor Pseudo. The idea of 8 billion people being exactly the same is even more hilarious

The original first Dead Space and Diablo (either 1 or 2). For whatever reason, I find myself turning to those games for comfort during rough times. Beat them and then continue on continuing on.

Sometimes when things are going badly, I tend to also give try to games that I've only had passing interest. Sometimes I find gems, but most times I tend to abandon them at some point through.

You are a good example. Your reward is the pat on the head. Good dog.

Yeah so sorry I didn't buy into your harebrained amateur psychologist spiel, dude. Your posts and condescending smart ass tone clearly indicate you are an expert on human behavior and how to act. You got it all figured out, everybody else is just in denial about what comforts them.

My "comfort games" are games that I play when times feel hard as nails. I escape into them -- often not advancing the story -- just wandering the hills, valleys, and worlds...

Red Dead Redemption

Dragon's Dogma Dark Arisen

It does me good to just pass the time -- exploring until the sun falls / moon rises. It may not be quite as good as hiking IRL, but it's a close second. ;)

I can now reveal my comfort:
Human behavior.

Yours is garnering attention of others or you use my examples and respond to others with pointless, casual comments. Because it is an easy thing to forget.

Have a nice day.

I post on a public discussion forum to get the attention of others ? You don't say? Profound observation Doctor, that's life changing stuff. You really ARE an expert. Thanks.

Anyone know a game where we can sit in front of the computer and vibe?
Not needing much interaction
And relaxing music playing in the background
But also music that doesn't make you sick after hearing it for 10 minutes+ (important!)

I play Beat Hazard(I'm fine with the music in the game, you can use your own music if you want to) and Proteus (not to be confused with Prodeus). Also Ynglet is in my library .I haven't played it yet, but it looks like a pretty simple game where you just kinda chill

edit-I like Beat Hazard but I can also see why somebody might not like it at all and find it obnoxious. It's pretty much constant bright flashing lights and explosions, and some people might not like the music either. So I am gonna throw in a more mellow subdued game...Osmos.

All these games are pretty basic without much gameplay depth, just games to chill out too.

Occurred to me that Ultima 4's NES version could work as a comfort game for me.

Not other versions; the NES version is simpler and less random, making it more comfortable to play. (With that said, money is a bit scarce and there's no way to block sleep, as the poison trick of other versions doesn't work in this one.)
This is an interesting topic.

For myself, I've always enjoyed games from the Wonderboy series as comfort games. Especially, Wonderboy in Monsterland and Dragon's Trap. They don't take overly long to finish either.
Castlevania for the nintendo entertainment system comes to mind.
Very cozy during the holidays.
