But what's up with these airport terminal bars? In my experience, at such places you are very unlikely to get a server who knows what they are doing, let alone a connoisseur of fine spirits. In the event that you stumble upon a place that somehow has a few interesting bottles, you are bound to have an interesting experience.

Last year I found a Van Winkle Lot B sitting on a shelf alone in Boston Logan. The guy poured me a 2oz for $9. What?

Another time I was traveling to Japan from DC, and decided to have a drink to make the long flight easier. I asked for a typical rye whiskey neat. What I got was a tumbler filled to the brim. I somehow made it to Tokyo.

I got lucky and found that they had one (the Siete Leguas) that someone had suggested to me a few years back. First time I've seen it anywhere. By this point I was expecting a religious experience but it was merely good - to my palate, anyway.

Is that a good price or bad price? I know airports are always a bit steep since A) you're limited to what's available past security and B) the concession fees add to the overhead. I paid about $12 for each of the shots I had, which isn't too far off what I would pay at the good Mex restaurant in town.

The barkeep poured the Avion and it killed the bottle just a little bit short of a full pour, so he was going to give it to me for free. He then found another bottle hiding somewhere and added a full shot on top of what he already poured. That - plus the earlier pour - was a lot of tequila for 10am. Haha.

I thought their selection was pretty good. Had the Don Julio stuff I love including 1942, Cabo Wabo, Corralejo, Cazadores, and maybe a dozen others I've had before. Oh, and three mezcals, none of which I've tried. I can't complain about what they had at this particular place.

Well, let's say it is pretty difficult to find a pour of that for less than $30 these days, with the price ceiling being much higher. The actual shelf price+bar premium would put it somewhere near $12-15, but if bars did that the bottle would be gone within hours (at $30 it lasts for a few days at least, geez...). It is not that good a drink either, but the hype around anything Van Winkle is ridiculous, if you're into bourbon. Clueless managers/servers and the typical airport clientele stopping by for a PBR help in these situations.

Gotcha - I don't know the bourbon market...

Had a similar thing at a small Mexican restaurant in Gas City, IN. Finished my meal and perused the tequila selections at the bar. Found my favorite, Don Julio 1942. Asked for a shot and the barkeep looked at me a bit funny. "You sure? That's really expensive." How much? "6 dollars". Hahaha - at 6 bucks it's a steal here in the States, and they're not making much off of it. Told him to pour two: one for me and one for him. I'm used to seeing it at $18 a pour, which I never buy since I have bottles at home.

I apologize for saying this, and don't mean it in a bad way, but that was uninformed criticism. Bourbon is as "valid" a drink and can be as complex as any Scotch, and has important provenance, too. Also applies to American rye whiskey.

But I can understand its bad reputation outside of the US, especially in Europe (I'm of European origin myself, and I witnessed this first hand). Good stuff is not always readily available there, or otherwise people are not exposed to it, so they often judge the entire category based on Jim Beam White Label and Jack Daniel's (or god forbid, the flavored crap kids do these days).

As an avid pursuer, collector, and drinker of all aged spirits, be it whisk(e)y of any kind, brandy, rum, or tequila, I assure you sir/ma'am, there is a wide world of American whiskey goodness waiting for you to explore!
