Telika: Nope. McAdams is excellent in it, but that doesn't save it.

DaCostaBR: Did they at least do anything with the more eerie aspects of the series? The first one was fairly down to earth for the most part, but I liked that undercurrent of wrongness in the world. If the culprit had turned out to be supernatural in some form, I would have totally bought it. Whatever trailers I've seen for the second season I don't remember having any of that.

DaCostaBR: See the OP. Already watching it, talked about it and the movie in the "I just watched [movie]" thread. The show is way better.

Maxvorstadt: Good shows on TV? Nowadays? Well, that was a good one, nearly laughed my ass off!!!
avatar
DaCostaBR: Really? I get that it's a joke but still, I find this current age of serialized shows so much better than what we had before.
I hope you don`t mean Telenovelas....

Oh yes, sorry about that. I just finished the second episode and I was so eager to "share". There are so much things to talk about in this show and the acting being real top notch ....well, you've seen it.

'Right now' nothing springs to my mind.
Black Mirror is getting 6 (I think) new episodes this month. I wanna see that.

I mean most of the stuff I mentioned in the OP. Game of Thrones, House of Cards, Stranger Things, etc.
Mr. Robot 8.7/10

Bron/Broen 8.6/10

Peaky Blinders 8.8/10

The Killing 8.2/10

It's pretty great. How about that orchestral cover of Paint it Black? Been listening to it nonstop.

C'mon man.

And the The Big Bang Theory has an 8,4. You know that doesn't count for much.

If you have any compliments to give about them, it will be a much more compelling argument than any score.

The only one of those I know is Game of Thrones, and that is crap, just like the novels.
I happen to like a show called "Scorpion".

It's reminiscent of a show from 1988 called "Probe" (co-written by Issac Asimov).

I like to call Scorpion "the nerd team" (an A-Team reference).
True Detective's second season was not so good, I liked the acting but the storyline was uninteresting to me.
Preacher - this was OK, I will watch the next season of it as well. Like Tarantino meets Twilight Zone.
Orphan Black - I only watched parts of the first season, it was so-so.

TV-shows I enjoy watching right now:
The Exorcist - horror drama
The Good Place - wacky comedy
Z Nation - season 3 - horror comedy
Luke Cage - action drama

Some other new-ish shows I liked:
Killljoys - sci-fi in Josh Weadon style
Dark Matter - sci-fi with a darker tone
Brooklyn Nine-Nine - funny-one-liner comedy
iZombie - detective comedy

I began watching Dark Matter and while it's ridiculously lame, the dynamics between the characters are somewhat interesting and enticing to watch, something about claustrophobic space adventures that speak to me.

I second Gravity Falls which reminds me I've only watched a few episodes.

I've heard good things about Versailles and Stranger Things but I've yet to watch them.

No, really no. Nothing in common. It's like a movie in a whole dfferent genre. The first season was borderline twinpeaksian, the second season is more ellroyish (well, with, ironically, a couple of sequences borrowed from twin peaks' most down-to-earth "one eyed jack's" subplot). It doesn't make it bad, it makes it more commonplace, less unique than the first season.

But I saw the second season before the first one, and I was "meh". The first season, afterwards, blew my mind. So, it's not a simple matter of expectation and genre switching. The second season did feel as a bloated attempt at ellroy grit, and it did feel artificial, dragging. It's a mostly predictable tale of career gangsters, global corruption, and potential redemptions, that you already saw hundreds of times. Lots of gloss and good intents, but finally... dunno, redundant ? Plus, I'm definitely no fan of Colin Farrell.

So you're correct. Appreciated or not, this second season has nothing of the first. And I think it's intentional, the author wanted to make some sort of anthology in very different styles. That's why I'd still be curious about the third one, if he makes it.
Wait, have you seen Breaking Bad? That's a must.

About brand new shows, I liked Mr Robot S1 and GoT S6 (better than the boring S5).

House of Cards S1 was fantastic, but I read that the next seasons lost a lot of the charm :\

Stranger Things for me wasn't as good as people said.
Acting was a bit off (Winona Ryder) and the ending was so-so.
I must say I never loved kids as main characters even in the 80's, though.

Vikings S1 was ok, but the rest didn't interest me as much.
Black Sails had some problems too (and I didn't care about any character).

I though the American version of The Bridge was really good, it's a shame they only did two season of it.
Personally I didn't like the Scandinavian version that much.

Speaking of political shows have you seen Designated Survivor ? It's OK so far.

Yeah, I had the exact same problem with Black Sails, it was hard to find any character to like in that show.

I only saw the first episode, and was bored half to death. I love the 80's kids adventure movies, but this felt so... I don't know, fake. It tried so hard to be exactly like those movies back then, to mimic the style, but it just rang hollow. It had none of the seemingly effortless charm of those movies. Not to mention that well, thsoe were movies. At hour point we would you'd be more than halfway through the story and neck deep in the action, while here it's dragged out to be an eight hour lone series, and after the first hour things barely moved. I know I probably shouldn't pass judgement after just one episode, but I'm really not motivated to watch any more.

Oh, that sucks. I sort of imagined seeing a series that was gritty for a few seasons before hitting you in the face with something really out there, but I guess they're just not building up to that. I'll follow your advice and give the second season a pass.
