babark: Yankee? :D

Elmofongo: Thats how us Latinos used to call them.

Now these days we say Gringo ;)

(No offense to US users)
Really? I always thought Gringo was a derogatory word for Mexicans or Latinos... Clearly I have been misunderstanding the context in which this phrase is used...
You learn something new every day.

As for the actual question, I've always just used American, but I can see where the OP is coming from.
According to Wikipedia, it's "black and white cookie".

babark: Indeed, but by someone outside of the US, "Yankee" is used to refer to all Americans.
Like how "punjabi" or "paki" have specific meanings and uses, but have now (in some places) spread to refer to any person from the Indian subcontinent.

DubConqueror: Just like what happens to the name of our country, The Netherlands abroad: the two north-western provinces of The Netherlands are together called Holland (North and South Holland). That's what the term Holland designates here, just those two provinces. But outside of the Netherlands 'Holland' is used for the country as a whole.

Where I'm living, in the east (Gelderland), I'm from Holland as I was born and raised in North Holland, making me a 'Hollander' but my fellow townspeople, if born in this city, aren't Hollanders, nor would they describe themselves as 'from Holland' (except when talking to non-Dutchmen abroad, they might). They'd only designate themselves with the name of their home town, as 'Geldrian' isn't really an identity. The province of Gelderland, being the largest province in Holland in landmass, is a patchwork of regions with wholly different identities.
I found out a few years ago. xD
I though all of the Netherlands was Holland.
Rednecks?
As an American, I sure don't want to be called anything else, the only other possible thing would be the state I come from.

What we usually call the different people from the Americas.
Americans
Canadians
Mexicans
And the rest is usually referred to in bulk e.g. Latin American or just Latinos.

Also Murricans is acceptable.
Oh and don't call me no Yankee, I'm from the south.

Capitalist pigs? :P

On a more serious note, in common day to day speak, usually "americanos" (americans) or "norte americanos" (north americans), but I've seen "rosados" (pinkies) in some internet places around here in Brazil.

I believe "estadounidenses" (something like "unitedstatians") is valid, though rarely ever used.

Other than that, I find "'Muricans!" quite funny. :D
Statisticians
Merregani.
I like the Spanish word: Estadounidenses.

227: We should ditch "American" and go with something unique. Something distinctive. Mysterious. Something like "Batman." Does it make sense? No, but the conversations would be glorious:

"Where are you from?"
"I'm Batman, actually."
"No kidding? I had an aunt that recently passed the citizenship test to become Batman."
Awesome.
Armoricans?!
