depending on your bias re. Steam - it is actually DRM free there, and does not require Steam to run. You only need Steam to buy and dowloand, and you can then delete it afterwards.

I think it has always been DRM free

edit - CEG became part of Steam after HL2 was released.

Haven't played any of the PES or FIFA games for several years now, the latter mostly due to microtransactions and all that jazz that revolves around EA releases.

I was big into the Football Manager games, dating back from the very first Championship Manager. I was also a researcher and moderator on the official SI Forums for many years, but around 2012 I was so busy with football journalism and then working for a Spanish club, I just didn't have the time to play FM or continue my activities with the developer.

Unlikely I'll ever have the free time I'd want to play FM properly again, so it's probable I won't return to the series, much as I get the itch to do so every so often. That said, FM installations have been tied to Steam for a while now, which is another reason I probably won't bother.

Speaking of which, I'm actually surprised that more of the older football/soccer sims aren't yet on GOG, although I would imagine they might be difficult to obtain with rights issues and whatnot, even though many can still be found at abandonware sites.

- Anything that requires me to install a client that insists on connecting to servers to purchase or run (e.g. Half-Life 2)
- Anything that's "always online" especially if it's single player
- Anything that's multiplayer only

Basically, if it wants the internet, I don't want it.

(note that I don't consider GoG games to "want the internet" as I can happily download an installer which will allow me to install on any PC and do all those lovely registry entries if needed without running a client... at least until the end times when Galaxy develops sentience and after a few failed attempts, takes over the world)

What about multiplayer only games that don't require the internet? (Either the game suppoirts LAN play, or it supports multiple players on one system.)

Strictly speaking, you don't need to collect a lot of monsters to beat the game.

In fact, Pokemon speedruns (excluding those with major glitches) typically revolve around getting one good pokemon and using it almost exclusively throughout the game. Sometimes, such speedruns use items to make certain battles easier or faster.

Casually, you could probably get by with just one main pokemon (or two if you are having trouble with enemy pokemon types) and (when they show up) legendary pokemon (which typically start out strong enough to be useful).

Yep. But aside from collecting monsters, there's something else that makes Pokemon unappealing to me and I can't quite put my finger on it. Which is weird in Pokemon case. Because it feels like it should fall easily to my preferable genre (jrpg) and theme (a kid going on adventure)

I have similar issue with ff6, chrono trigger, Mario games

To me, it's just the other way round... I really, really don't like this type of battles, which is one of the reasons I will probably never play most JRPGs, but somehow I still played through a few of them on my phone, as I have written above.

Football manager - if you replace 'probably' with 'definitely' in the title.

Also, any pokemon game. Pretty sure it will be fun, but I somehow doubt I'll ever get round to it.

Any game with a "competitive scene". Let's just say Hearthstone has made it clear why I don't enjoy playing competitive games.
Any "free to play" game... "but wait, we also have microtransations, but we are marketing it as free to play". I can't get away from Hearthstone.
Any expansion based card game. I just can't get away from Hearthstone.
Any MMO. I sworn them off, since they continued Warcraft 3's story in World of Warcraft. WTF!

Recently, I'm starting to consider avoiding all roguelikes. Most / ?all? just don't have a proper end game. You just run through the same content, until RNG decides to give you the most ridiculously powerful items from the start, in which case anybody could defeat the big bad boss at the end. Such a disappointment.

Following from that, most Diablo styled games, Diablo 2&3 being the main culprits. Again the end game, is to do boss runs to RNG out the best equipment.

I didn't set it up as such, but apparently I'm going to be avoiding anything made by Blizzard. Blizzard of old(up until Warcraft 3) is long gone, dead and buried next to other great studios like Bullfrog, Westwood, Black Isle and New World Computing.

No, it wasn't, that's why people hated Steam in the beginning. It required always on line with login to work, also updates were slow, messy and often failed, putting the game on stall indefinitely. Valve removed the requirements a few years after.
