I don't hate Spirits Within' but it is NOT Final Fantasy, at least any of the games. So if you are ok with that feel free to watch it.

Those are not two different things. They are all part of the same one single thing.

Woke games always make characters look as ugly as they possibly can, on purpose.

Thankfully, that strategy is now starting to backfire, as seen in recent flops like Dustborn, Concord, Stars Wars: Outlaws, Star Wars: The Acolyte, Rings of Power, the Borderlands movie, etc.

Spirits Within really should have been its own thing, It's hardly a stellar film, but I'm sure it would be looked at a lot more fondly today than it is if it wasn't saddled with the baggage from being cynically tied in to Final Fantasy.

That doesn't sound like a very good business model. I mean, loans have to be paid back at some point, right?

it's a nice standalone movie. that, as already pointed out, isn't Final Fantasy.
I don't regret watching it.

It has sadly become a viable business model, to the point where actually selling a product is secondary. Add to that various grants and whatnot and you've got a winner. As evidenced by mainstream entertainment so thoroughly in recent years.
