I feel like I have to state my feelings about this movie. Full Disclosure: I am a star wars fan.
IMHO this is a fun movie. Next to mad max one of the funnest time I had at the movies all year and I probably go every 2 weeks. Is it a retelling of a new hope? Yes. But so was Phantom Menace, but that movie hid it better due to a completely different color palet and tone compared to the original trilogy. That's not really laziness since the entire point of the star wars trilogies (according to george Lucas) is that it repeats itself, in his own words: "it rhymes". But I agree it can also be considered an easy way out.
The new characters were great (finn, Rey, BB-8, Poe), the old characters didn't really feel shoehorned into it, so that was good. And about Luke Skywalker: it was pretty clear he wasn't going to be in it much when you look at the trailers and the promotional material (action figures, posters,...) but then again you could say that the entire point of the movie was Luke so you get more then I thought you would. The end isn't as much as a cliffhanger, it's just a great shot and an ending that leaves you wanting more. The story in this movie is told to completion and it sets up the other movie: there is no cliffhanger here.
Then a lot of the issues viewers seem to have are really strange: Most if not all issues are born out of stupidity (not being able to understand the movie if the movie doesn't explain every detail 5 times) or just not liking or understanding Star Wars Lore. But that's the thing: some reviewers seem to think this movie is good enough to enjoy even if you don't like star wars. I disagree: it's easier to watch as a non star wars fan then probably any other SW movie but if you don't like SW, you will not like The Force Awakens. Feel free to respond to this part or with any issues you might have but I wasn't going to elaborate because this post is way too long as it is.
Things I didn't like: The second act was a bit slow with some uninteresting and long dialogue scenes, The CGI Snoke (I thought Maz was fine) and somehow I felt the Starkiller Base scenes weren't perfectly edited (the cuts to the ground from space and vice versa).
Also why spoil the movie? That's just really sad and childish. I walked out of the theatre after the movie and a 12 year old kid said I will spoil this movie for my friend who will watch it in a few days. First of all: yup you are an immature, childish kid and nothing more. Second: you're not his friend, you are waste of space.
