New features, local currency option, new payment methods, store credit, and an updated look for GOG.com!

For almost six years now we strive to bring you not only the best in DRM-Free gaming, but also to give you the greatest experience possible. To that end we're always looking for ways to improve our site and service. Today, we're rolling out a vastly updated version of our store with an improved interface, sleek new look, and lots of handy new features. Let's take a quick tour, shall we?

Video: Welcome to the fresher, better GOG.com!

First of all we are giving you more DRM-free content: movies! We are starting with 20 documentaries about internet and gaming culture but we aim high! You can find more on this in the appropriate newspost, so let's focus on the other features we're rolling out.

We wanted to give you more choice as to how you pay for things on GOG.com. Now it's up to you if you want to pay in US Dollars, or in the currency primarily used in your country, whether it's the Euro, Pounds Sterling, Australian Dollars, or Russian Roubles. That's four new currencies supported by GOG.com for your convenience. Still - the choice is yours, so if you want to stick to US dollars, just switch to it - you find this option at the bottom of each page. To make buying things at GOG.com an even more flexible process, we're introducing some new payment methods: Sofort, Giropay, Webmoney, and Yandex.

All this also means that users for whom the local currency pricing has been enabled will have an option to select one of two different prices for each game in our catalog. Of course, we stand by the simple truth that $1 does not equal 1€, so a game with a $5.99 price tag will cost 4.49 Euro, 3.69 British Pounds, 6.49 Australian Dollars, and 219 Roubles respectively. $9.99 translates to 7.49 Euro, 5.99 Pounds Sterling, 10.89 Australian Dollars, and 359 Roubles. In a perfect world we would apply the same method of pricing to all of the games we offer. However, things are a little bit more complicated, and there are some games in our catalog that follow a different region-based pricing scheme. However, we wouldn't be GOG.com if we didn't find a way to make right by the users who end up paying relatively more for such titles. Here's where the Fair Price Package comes in!

The Fair Price Package applies to all of the titles which we couldn't include in our standard pricing scheme. If you end up paying more for a game than its standard US Dollar price, we'll refund you the difference out of our own pocket. The refunded value will be added to your account in Store Credit in the currency of your purchase. That's right, no more gift codes, you'll be getting Store Credit that you can use to purchase anything on GOG.com or partially pay for an item that's more expensive. More choice, ease of use, and less limitations!

Finally, the GOG.com store has gotten itself a substantial visual revamp. We went for a fresh, mobile-friendly design that should make it even easier to find the games you want, notice the hot promos, and see what's new. The main page, catalog view, product pages, and checkout have been updated and also lay the groundwork for even more overhaul, coming within the next few months together with many of the GOG Galaxy features. We hope you like it!

PS. Unfortunately, we need to drop some titles from our classic catalog. In such cases, we always do our best to give you an advance warning and a last chance to purchase such games - preferably with a considerable discount. Check this news post to find out which titles are being removed from our catalog, when will it happen, and what parting discounts for them do we currently offer.

MaxFulvus: Thanks for answering. Even my "1" notification is grey ! Red was so helpful :(
Yeah I agree, I hope they'll bring us back some colors. Perhaps we should sent de Blob to their office :D

[edit] Another thing. Does anybody else have this weird thing that after posting a message you are not at the message you just posted but completely at the bottom of the page (where all this links for support/facebook/whatever are) so that you have to scroll up again?

Once again, I like the new design (aside from the grey GOG logo). But... Grey avatars??? Awesome! I'm in! :D :D :D
Hi :-)

I have to say, I am pleased you are sticking to fair pricing even when it means (at least temporarily) losing a publisher. That is a really good move and very much appreciated!

It is a nice idea to bring us movies as well. I am not interested at all in buying digital movies (I either buy discs or stream) but hope you can make some profit with it.

Concerning the new design, it is unfortunately absolutely horrible. The greyish/silverish look is very cold and uninviting. It makes me want to leave the website. It is not warm and welcoming at all. Also, everything kind of looks the same, such as the notification buttons are grey now as well. Really horrible. Very, very, very bad design in my opinion.

But I appreciate that it is possible to choose your currency. Sometimes, depending on the exchange rate etc., it can be even slightly cheaper (as in 2, 3 cents) to pay in Euro. It is good that you are giving us, the customers, the choice as to which currency we want to use (home currency or USD). I would like to see a regional price warning right next to the price tag though. E.g. previously it was clear that Divinity Original Sin used regional pricing because the price was displayed in Euro. Now I can only see the difference if I am on the page of a particular game. Please add a "warning" light or something for extra comfort.

Thanks :)

Yep that was exactly my thinking when I saw other avatars here :D Let's see if we can get rid of all the colors here^^

This page is now perfect to be viewed on monochrome screens.
True old school PC gaming.

Edit: Argh, another color offender is below me.

G-Doc: Ummm... I'm pretty sure we haven't done anything with the forums layout. Try switching to a darker theme on the top of the forum page, maybe?
And when you’ll do something with forums layout? It’s still unreadable on small screen.

Also: main site is displaying uncorrect under mobile Opera.

Having separate mobile and desktop sites is more work for GOG, which means they would have even less time to acquire the classic games that many people are moaning about.
Are you seriously suggesting that the GOG staff tasked with web design is also involved in the process of acquiring games and that if they their web design workload increased it would negatively affect the process of signing games?

Because the job openings here make it pretty clear that it's not the case.
Seems GOG's facebook page has now a purple logo. I like it a lot better than the grey/black one here. Hopefully we get to see it here as well.
I'm not sure I see the point of http://gog.com/favicon.ico versus https://www.gog.com/favicon.ico -- though I definitely prefer the one with colour.

On a happier note, the notification system is telling me what kind of notification I have again. Edit: and now that's stopped working again. :-(

I don't know guys, I prefer the new style, gray GOG logo included. Though I think I'd prefer some sort of combination of gray logo and violet FB avatar. Still, all in all, it's looking good to me.

Breja: It used to be simple, one price, no DRM, no bullshit. Why mess with that? It WORKED.

MoP: "They could've settled into their niche as 'that place that sells old games', and let it be. But they have bigger dreams than that."
I guess they're living their dream.
Nice strawman. I never said they should keep to old games only. I like the fact they sell new ones too. The first game I bought here was Legend of Grimrock. What I'm saying is that they should keep to HOW they sell the games.

gooberking: To that, when it comes to mobile friendly design, that isn't about appealing to a hipper audience. At this point they were grossly behind on the trend to the point that the old site could be considered user hostile.
What trend? The "mobile" trend? I hardly care about that. The old design looked and worked better for a computer, and I really don't think mobile is a prime way people use to browse a store with PC games they play on their PC. There is nothing wrong with ignoring trends, most trends are retarded.

Any news when the notification system is going to be fixed since its still not working properly just showing me on account that I have one new notification and when I open it nothing shows in the menu as a new notification.

Seriously, this new design looks way to cold and boring. As if half of the stylesheets and images are not loading. Its not so much of a design, but rather the absent of any design. To me it looks as interesting and distinctive as hospital room...

Sorry guys!
This is going to really frighten Mr Spock when he returns:)
I agree with those who hate the new style. I also hate sites "improving" with no way to view the old style (à-la-Google...) and have changed my bookmark for this site as a result.

Until and unless GOG decides to make it easy on the eyes to actually find anything on their site (like it was with the old layout) I will rarely be viewing anything other than my Library to check for updates.

As I'm sure many other people will point out: GOG makes enough money that they won't care about losing mine. But that still is at least a few hundred a year that they won't make.
