New features, local currency option, new payment methods, store credit, and an updated look for GOG.com!

For almost six years now we strive to bring you not only the best in DRM-Free gaming, but also to give you the greatest experience possible. To that end we're always looking for ways to improve our site and service. Today, we're rolling out a vastly updated version of our store with an improved interface, sleek new look, and lots of handy new features. Let's take a quick tour, shall we?

Video: Welcome to the fresher, better GOG.com!

First of all we are giving you more DRM-free content: movies! We are starting with 20 documentaries about internet and gaming culture but we aim high! You can find more on this in the appropriate newspost, so let's focus on the other features we're rolling out.

We wanted to give you more choice as to how you pay for things on GOG.com. Now it's up to you if you want to pay in US Dollars, or in the currency primarily used in your country, whether it's the Euro, Pounds Sterling, Australian Dollars, or Russian Roubles. That's four new currencies supported by GOG.com for your convenience. Still - the choice is yours, so if you want to stick to US dollars, just switch to it - you find this option at the bottom of each page. To make buying things at GOG.com an even more flexible process, we're introducing some new payment methods: Sofort, Giropay, Webmoney, and Yandex.

All this also means that users for whom the local currency pricing has been enabled will have an option to select one of two different prices for each game in our catalog. Of course, we stand by the simple truth that $1 does not equal 1€, so a game with a $5.99 price tag will cost 4.49 Euro, 3.69 British Pounds, 6.49 Australian Dollars, and 219 Roubles respectively. $9.99 translates to 7.49 Euro, 5.99 Pounds Sterling, 10.89 Australian Dollars, and 359 Roubles. In a perfect world we would apply the same method of pricing to all of the games we offer. However, things are a little bit more complicated, and there are some games in our catalog that follow a different region-based pricing scheme. However, we wouldn't be GOG.com if we didn't find a way to make right by the users who end up paying relatively more for such titles. Here's where the Fair Price Package comes in!

The Fair Price Package applies to all of the titles which we couldn't include in our standard pricing scheme. If you end up paying more for a game than its standard US Dollar price, we'll refund you the difference out of our own pocket. The refunded value will be added to your account in Store Credit in the currency of your purchase. That's right, no more gift codes, you'll be getting Store Credit that you can use to purchase anything on GOG.com or partially pay for an item that's more expensive. More choice, ease of use, and less limitations!

Finally, the GOG.com store has gotten itself a substantial visual revamp. We went for a fresh, mobile-friendly design that should make it even easier to find the games you want, notice the hot promos, and see what's new. The main page, catalog view, product pages, and checkout have been updated and also lay the groundwork for even more overhaul, coming within the next few months together with many of the GOG Galaxy features. We hope you like it!

PS. Unfortunately, we need to drop some titles from our classic catalog. In such cases, we always do our best to give you an advance warning and a last chance to purchase such games - preferably with a considerable discount. Check this news post to find out which titles are being removed from our catalog, when will it happen, and what parting discounts for them do we currently offer.

Wishbone: You mean you actually planned to have a bit of color around, and all the soulless corporate grey is a bug? Fantastic news :-D

On a serious note, bugs, as in technical difficulties, are only to be expected with a large update like this. I'm quite confident you'll get them ironed out eventually. But please do listen to what people are saying about the new design as well. Don't assume that just because it isn't a technical problem it isn't important.

Actually, some of those look more alive.
The Office Equipement Website is the only one okay in the list because of the colours. The Others are just soulless, it's so sad.

And after a few hours with the new look. I miss the colours, it's too grey, one coloured site, too sterile, too industrial.
I think it's also mobile phone oriented. How ironic for a website dedicated to Computer games. Responsive design is a plague, the creation of lazy people only to avoid working on multiple layout.

G-Doc: Just a quick note: rest assured we're following this thread closely, taking note of every issue, suggestion, or concern you guys might be posting. We know that some things aren't yet working 100% as they should, but we'll continue to work on putting the site in better shape than it ever was.

Thanks for all your feedback! If you find anything that needs our attention and post it here, you can consider it reported, and you don't need to trouble yourself with sending us a support ticket.

On behalf of the GOG.com team, thank you for all the kind words and constructive criticism!
I just hope the inability to determine what each new item is ends. When I logged in it said "8" but did not break it down between msg, forum replies, updated games, etc and I really relied upon that.

modkon: No, I have the dark theme. As I said, it's a mistake on my end then.

But still one thing: loading of the site and game pages seems slower than before, GOG was usually the fastest of all the sites to buy digital games from. But maybe the server's overrun right now.
No the loading is terrible since the website was restarted and there is still occasional blue text occuring and top bar disappearing. The mainpage widgets load very long. Personally im getting eye issues after looking at this webpage for a long time since there is nothing to keep the eye occupied. Never had those problems on the old one.

ShadowWulfe: Huh, so did Nordic want a greedier regional price than some of the other publishers on here? As far as I know there are quite a few games that have been regionally priced besides those.
No idea. As this thread indicates, there are suddenly a good deal more games with regional pricing than merely Age of Wonders 3, Divinity: Original Sin and The Witcher 3.
high rated
I like the idea with the store credit.
Regional currencies, make me pretty nervous though... With any other publisher I'd be sure this is the first step to sneak in regional pricing, but I hope GOG stays GOG and then we'll all be fine :)

I dislike the new layout immensely, but then again I've been on GOG since 2011 so I am obviously an old grumpy man who dislikes change in general ;)
But it appears to me like a hybrid between Steam and Windows 8, with all the tiles and the grey... not feeling like my Good Old Games in warm Green and Yellows :(

A more objective concern is the new page layout for individual games. As someone who owns a good part of the GOG backlog, I was always enormously pleased with the fact that I could browse the catalog and read up on games and there was always this giant button reminding me that I already owned a particular game.
Instead of the purchasing button it would give the option to REDOWNLOAD, which was very convenient and more importantly always cemented my goodwill towards GOG since you guys didn't even give me the option to make a purchase by mistake.
Now there is a giant ADD TO CART button there with a small grey on grey disclaimer that I already own the game and no option to redownload!
I assume this decision reflect the long term plans with Galaxy and the idea that we wouldn't use the store to redownload a game, but I for one always like to check the store page and read a couple of reviews or look at the screenshots to "get in the mood" so to speak. So this change feels kinda iffy. Having no patience and no memory I just know, I'll end up clicking on the purchase button by accident and then there is no warning just the CHECKOUT pop up....
Again I know there is no ill intend here but it still doesn't seem as user friendly and respectful as, well, good old GOG. So i think this is an aspect which objectively warrants a redesign IMHO.

TL;DR
Old and afraid of changes.
no pretty colors anymore.
no more REDOWNLOAD button on store page = danger of accidental double purchases!!!

<3 Good Old Games
Cool, a new GOG.
Sadly that means I'll visit this site even less than in the last months cause with my dial-up con the site is very slow.
Anyway, thank you guys for Fallout....

Frustrated by the new site. I need to scroll for the average game rating . Can't easily tell if I have wishlisted something.

Yuck
Reviews can no longer be sorted by "most recent first".

I hope that feature is not permanently missing because I always check the newest reviews before I check the most helpful ones.
I like it. Definitely a cleaner, more organized feel to it, in my opinion.

But I think the very top left "gog com" icon should still be green and yellow!

So, new GOG with even less Hippo? Sad panda. :(
The new layout feels kind of uselessly bulky. It could be a trick caused by the sudden greyness, but I don't think so. It seems less space efficient.
Will you guys be bringing more free games or games that were released to the public free? There are a lot of great but forgotten gems out there that really deserve a second chance.

Plus will there be an increase in the number of game releases? You have to admit that the number on offer per week is a bit wanting when compared to the competition.
I note that the "Average rating" no longer tells us how many people have rated the game, which I found to be useful information. Without it I must assume that all the ratings were made by five members of the development team and thus cannot be trusted.
One last plug before going to bed: http://www.gog.com/wishlist/site/optional_site_layout_for_lower_and_nonwide_resolutions

If you have opinions on the large fixed position fixed width navigation bar, please give this item a visit and perhaps a vote.

TDP: GOG, please make the top bar smaller. Shrink it. You can keep the design, but it shouldn't take up so much space. Every single button now takes up WAY too much screen space (seriously... compare this to any other website, it's pretty ridiculous).
Yes, great point, it should be half the thickness.
