IronArcturus: Do they all work with an Xbox 360 controller?
avatar
HiddenAsbestos: I think so, but it's not really the sort of game you'd want to play with a controller really. It's a lot more chilled out in general and there's less focus on space combat compared to something like TIE Fighter.

For X you'll be generally fine with the mouse + WASD for 'strafe' thrusters. Since there are also a lot of commands you'll use shortcut keys for I'm not sure it'd map too well to a pad either without having to reach over to the keyboard for something.
So it's more like Freelancer where just a mouse+kb are needed?

IronArcturus: How do the different X games differ besides the graphics?
avatar
real.geizterfahr: In the third one, you can fly even more ships and build even more stations. Egosoft added a lot of "end game content" there, that still keeps you motivated after hundreds of hours of gameplay.
So is the third one the best one?

IronArcturus: So is the third one the best one?
Definitely. In X2 you'll reach a point where you've done everything. In X3 you'll never stop learning the game, because there's so much to do.

Thanks for the info! Also, do you know if any of the games run in a window?

All of them.

I think so, I've not actually played Freelancer but it sounds similar - X3 is probably bigger in scope and less polished.

I would recommend X3 : Reunion to start with. Play the plot missions (it's a simple linear campaign) until you get bored / stuck. I saw it through to the end but did need a walk through and to cheat a couple of times and it's pretty confusing to follow the story (like a badly edited movie I guess). Had a lot of fun though and it took about 30 hours. Some of that time was spent reading a book at the same time while my trade empire grew.

Then move onto Terran Conflict. It has a slightly improved UI and a more non-linear campaign and if you play it first you'll probaby find Reunion too annoying and miss out on the fun stuff it has to offer. Once you've got bored of the campaign in TC you've got the awesome end-game galaxy monopoly to wade into.

Albion Prelude came out fairly soon after Terran Conflict and is a bit like an old-style stand-alone expansion. It's definitely the most polished but I've not spent enough time with it to know if the end game is better or worse than TC.

And a film taken off my wishlist.

*Happy**

Now, the only film on my wishlist is "Playing Columbine". I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

P.S. GOG, if you had included Kyn Deluxe Edition in the games on the first days, I would have bought it rather than the Base version. Now... Meh. No upgrade available so, no, I won't be spending another $11.69 for a soundtrack.

*For given levels of happy.

IronArcturus: But luckily I did get the Anno Series and from what I can tell you don't have to directly fight your competitors. In Anno 1701 there are pirates, but they can be avoided. The games are a lot of fun!
So it seems you did manage to download the games eventually.
What was the problem and the solution?

I had to refresh my account a bunch of times and it finally went through. I stil have no idea why just that series decided not to download before, but I'm glad I finally got my games! Anno 1701 is a lot of fun!
Day 6 was very good for me. My first purchases from GOG:
- Jade Empire: Special Edition
- Nox
