tinyE: I've never tried the X games. Can anyone compare them to anything? Yeah it's a vague question I know! :P
They're quite unique... You can fly everything - from a small scout ship, over a carrier, up to a freakin' huge space station transport ship! But flying is only a very small part of X. After a while you'll start to scan asteroids for minerals to build mines on the rich ones. You'll build huge space stations with enormous solar panels to produce energy cells. You'll build all kinds of space factories to build all kinds of stuff, like computer chips, missiles, sattelites, etc. Every station needs different ressources (energy, food, ores, etc.) to produce their goods, so you'll have to build a trading fleet to ship goods from one of your factories to another. But some sectors are very hostile, so you'll have to start to build a military fleet to protect your trading routes. And then there are some very good ships that you can't buy, so you'll have to train some marines and board these ships (needs lots of special equipment and training)! Later, when you have your HQ, you can disassemble these ships to get a blueprint.

X is huge. You can play it as a pirate (steal goods and ships), as a mercenary (get a good fighter and later a capital ship), a merchant, or build a huge enterprise. Start a war against some species and eliminate them if you want. The universe is yours. It's a huge sandbox.

JinKazaragi: the myst bundle would be intereting if I could play all of them, unfortunatly there seems to be at least one game which isn't compatible with my OS (Win 7 64 bit)
According to their individual game cards, all games in that bundle are compatible with Windows 7.
As far as I can tell, the only title in the series that's not officially supported for that OS is "Real Myst", but that's not part of the offer. In its place is "Real Myst Masterpiece Edition".

Yes, but I read the user reviews. A lot of people complained about it not working with Win7 64bit

How do the different X games differ besides the graphics?

There are lots of tweaks taking place, usually the later games are better as far as switching on the auto-pilot goes and of course the way AI ships fly (Though collisions will still occur at times).

Something that always was an issue for me is that the games had cockpits for each ship and the cockpits of a fighter and a freighter differed greatly. X3 did away with cockpits (though they can be modded in again), which gives greater vision in all directions but to me personally it messed with the immersion. I liked the feeling of having a solid console around me, the feeling of the glass inches away and behind only space.

In x3 you can also build complex structures. An example: in x2 or x-tension you had to build one solar power plant to get energy cells, one ranch to get meat and one food processing plant to create blocks from that meat. Each of those stations needed freighters assigned to it to get resources necessary for production in or to sell the product. In X3 you can connect these three (or way more for more complex products) stations to streamline productivity.

real.geizterfahr: *snip*
It sounds like the game that I wish Rebel Galaxy had been.

Sounds cool! Do they all work with an Xbox 360 controller?

In the first one, you're limited to one single ship. You can build some stations, but you'll have to buy the ressources and sell their products on your own. It's quite a bit more linear than the others. You basically build stations and earn money to upgrade your ship, because you want to progress in the story. Story is irrelevant in the later X games.

In the second one you can fly lots of different ships. You can build fleets to get goods to and from your stations. You manage your fleet from a slightly complex menu. You can hijack NPC ships and sell the pilots as slaves on a pirate base ;)

In the third one, you can fly even more ships and build even more stations. Egosoft added a lot of "end game content" there, that still keeps you motivated after hundreds of hours of gameplay.

I haven't tried that one myself, but some people swear by controllers, others by old fashioned joysticks and yet again others by a simple mouse. Most use a mix of those. I personally just stuck with mouse/keyboard, since it's not all about flying the ship, unless you're playing as a pirate/mercenary/police. I like the trader path the most and you have to really manage a growing empire as one. That means sending trading ships you bought into different sectors while you yourself head to a station to sell your cargo for the highest price possible, setting up stations to produce and freighters to sell those products.

That might be the most glaring flaw of those games. The GUI. It's clunky and unintuitive. The are menus and submenus and sub-submenus you have to click through to get to where you want. All of those do have keyboard shortcuts and I think the secret to making the GUI usable in a quick way is learning those. Once you got the shortcuts down it does feel quick and easy though.
Damn. I really want to check out Trine 3, since I liked the other two so much, but the reviews (they boil down to "it's 4 hours long and more or less broken") make me question if it's worth it even at 50% off. I guess I'll keep waiting for some Lucasarts games...

I think so, but it's not really the sort of game you'd want to play with a controller really. It's a lot more chilled out in general and there's less focus on space combat compared to something like TIE Fighter.

For X you'll be generally fine with the mouse + WASD for 'strafe' thrusters. Since there are also a lot of commands you'll use shortcut keys for I'm not sure it'd map too well to a pad either without having to reach over to the keyboard for something.
