Which games are keeping you company this weekend?

You must stay hidden.
The shadows are your most loyal friends: always there when you need them, always eager to consume your enemies on your behalf. Silence is your cruel mistress: caring and protective when you keep on her good side, deadly and vindictive when you disrespect her.
But what of your enemies? They are the ones who'll teach you, help you learn from your mistakes, and only succumb when you're finally ready to outsmart and outmanoeuvre them.
For in the best stealth games, the greatest challenge is to be patient, plan your every move, and wait for the right moment to strike. Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun is one such game, according to RockPaperShotgun, Kotaku, NZGamer, and pretty much everyone else.
Do you guys have any other personal favorites, when it comes to sneaky games? Let's hear them!

Surely you've got some gaming planned for this weekend, too. Perhaps you picked up some cool game(s) during our Monstrous Winter Sale that you're looking forward to firing up. Or are you still browsing, trying to make up your mind on what to get before all these sweet deals go away? Go on, share your Weekend Playlist with us. It can include single-player games, multiplayer games, console exclusives, anything - we are not judging. In fact, we are sharing too!

So, amiGOGs, what are you playing this weekend?

yoshino: I joined in the Fellowship, which is quite dubious cult. but I want to know the truth of the organization.
Now my party is going to go on Minoc. but I can't have enough money to buy foods and training...as with other Ultima series, early game's economy is tough.
If you go to a certain pirate village and do some gambling, it's possible to get so much money that the game crashes due to lack of available memory to handle all that money.

Dreaganos: Best stealth game?
Well that would be Thief and Thief 2 and then the Dark Mod.
I second that whole-heartedly, although I must say I haven't played most of the modern stealth games. A friend of mine who is also a devoted fan of Thief 1+2 highly recommended Thief 4 and Dishonored to me, but I won't buy any games with DRM.

The Thief series did many things right with hardly any predecessors to draw from: Atmosphere, controls, minimalistic HUD, artwork, story, voice acting … (As for controls, I damn every first-person game since Thief that doesn't let me climb ledges or lean around corners.)

That leads right to the second question here: At present, I'm playing Arx Fatalis using the Arx Libertatis port – for the third time in approx. ten years after two failed playthroughs, shame on me. I am eager to finally finish it this time. Here too, I skilled my character for dex/stealth with some magic in the bargain. After Arx, Thief 3 waits for completion after finally starting it last winter.

The dark time of the year calls for dark games. :)

Parallel to that, a weekly 2P co-op playthrough of Icewind Dale EE is almost done. After that, Divinity: Original Sin EE is most likely next in line.

Thanks for sharing this. I tried Arx Fatalis in the past, but I couldn't get the magic to work and after an hour I lost interest and left it just sitting on my disk. I tried with Arx Libertatis now and this version has no trouble recognizing either of the (two) runes I know, so now I'll probably give it another chance. Not immediately, there is unspecified amount of Shadow warrior 2 in my immediate future, but it's back near top of my backlog.

hyperagathon: I've started The Witcher. (...) Oh, and thumbs up for Polish. Vidžmini, vidžmini everywhere :)
Well, to be specific, in Polish "witcher" is "wiedźmin" :) "Vidžmini" looks more like Czech, which is quite reasonable due to significant popularity the Witcher book series (written by Polish author long before the games made by CD Project) gained there.

For all who don't know Andrzej Sapkowski's books, I really recommend them. They are not game-based novels, but bestselling series of very specific fantasy with great Slavic setting. First two books - The Last Wish and Miecz przeznaczenia (Sword of Fate? don't know the translation) - are collections of brilliant short stories. Definitely worth to read.

Glad to be of service. :) I highly recommend that you do that, for Arx Fatalis/Libertatis being one of my all-time favorite games. Like Thief, it got many things right many of today's games lack. The most prominent one is the interface which manages to combine a direct FPS control with an point-to-click world interaction and item-management. I also cherish the atmosphere and free exploration of ~80% of the game area without any imminent pressure to follow the story – you just do what you feel like. As for atmosphere, the game has a creepy crypt that is still my personal reference for all creepy crypts in games (no spoilers here, you stumble upon its entrance quite early – to get inside is another matter :) ).

Nicely said. :)

Quite the contrary, the games are based on them, the books being placed timewise before the games. So, if you read them prior playing, you will have some (more or less happy) rejoin moments.

edits: typos, I should have breakfast eventually. ;)

hyperagathon: I've started The Witcher. One huge RPG every second week is going to kill me. Went through the tutorial-y part. The combat is even ickier than I remember, but having read the books recently, it's fun to see it all in a game. Oh, and thumbs up for Polish. Vidžmini, vidžmini everywhere :)
:-)

I've read all the books after playing the first game (well, Season of Storms hadn't been out back then) and played the game all over again. It's great to see how much (even more) depth the games gain - there are so many little references to the books that plant the games firmly into the Witcher universe. And meeting Zoltan or Dandalion really feels like a reunion with old friends...
I forgot to mention another nice feature of Arx: The Intuition skill lets you gradually notice secrets and traps better. So although your character's stats are important, you the player do the actual noticing. Kudos to the developers for that!

Also, some of the short-stories lay the foundation for the events later in the novels. Like how Geralt met Yennefer (how difficult their relationship is...), Ciri's parents and how Ciri's and Geralts fates are linked.

And also - not to spoil - something dragon-related which is kind of the background for the ending of Witcher 2 (but you'll only find out, if you go with Iorveth).

Arx is certainly a good game. AFAIK it started out as an Ultima Underworld remake, but they couldn't get the rights, so they turned it into their own game.
I think the balancing is a little broken in the later stages of the game. It's very easy to build a character that simply can't defeat the later enemies, and this is not happening gradually (so you could correct your build) but you're suddenly hitting a wall...
Much like the archer-problem in Gothic 1.

I know. It was a bit of fun with transliterating it into Croatian spelling while keeping the pronounciation. I was happy to hear the terms and names I was wondering about while reading the books. For example, that's not how I imagined you'd pronounce "Triss" :)
Playing the new Master of Orion this weekend. Gonna take a bit to kick the tires on this one I imagine. A good game so far but I've only done the 'tutorial match' so far. As always, my favorites Warlords Battlecry 3 and Empire Earth (1 Gold), with a little MUGEN (fighting game engine) thrown in here and there as a screen saver. As always, working on the weekend and not much time for much else. Hoping to have enough time to try Darklands as well. I have the original on 3.5" floppy with the original book but I've never played it. But on top of this my mother's computer updated from Windows 7 to Windows 10 and I'm probably going to have to spend a bit of time to wipe it clean and go back to Windows 7 again (and update her computer for 3 weeks or so). Gonna be a messy weekend one way or another...

Stealth game? On FPS, Adventure and RPG type games I prefer to use the 'god mode' cheat codes and just blast 'em all at point blank range. Now that's stealth.

Between the Thief games, and Splinter Cell for stealth, for me anyway...

Playing, CIV 4 & Lords of Xulima.
Well as a Stealth Game I play Jagged Alliance 2 with 1,13 Mod. UV/ Night Visions and they never know what hit them. ;-)
I picked up the Disciples games so I'll be playing the first one. When I get tired of being awful at an old game, I'll switch to Age of Wonders III so I can be awful in a new(er) game.

Not sure if it's the best stealth game, but one of the hardest ones I've played came out about 13 years ago called "Sneak Past the Baby's Room in an Old House With Squeaky Floorboards". Recently I've been playing the sequel, "Wake the Teenager on a Weekend Morning" and found that they've gone in a completely different direction.
Trying Titan Quest again, on the new PC and with a different character direction this time.

Just finished Crysis and Crysis Warhead. Fun stuff. Stealth sort of? Got your built-in cloaking function but you're still detectable at close range. At longer range, like 10 meters or so, you're golden to run and jump at will. Til you run out of power.
Still BLACKHOLE and LIMBO. I have a lo of fun with them, especially with the former.

Stealth games? Thief, Commandos and Desperados.
