I am not using GOG Galaxy. I am downloading the Offline Backups. GOG is throttling my downloads.... What do?

Unfortunately, there is nothing to be done. Some of us also experience ridiculously-slow download speeds, while others (often in Europe) do not.

Honestly, I wish that I were able to assist you, but, the problem originates with the CDN chosen by GOG (Fastly).

You're not alone, unfortunately there isn't much to be done about it other than complain or buy games elsewhere.

If you search the forum, you will find there are many many similar threads as yours.

Unfortunately GOG treats many of us as second or third class citizens and gives us a lousy download speed.

I don't recall whether they were using the Fastly CDN before the middle of last year, when we had a kind of crash here, where you weren't able to download games for a while. But when downloading became available again, many of us have had an extremely slow download speed ever since.

At least, the slow speed is limited to a single thread. So you can get around the issue somewhat, if you download with a program that uses multiple threads, such as Free Download Manager 5. Alas GOG also seem to impose a thread limit, so you aren't likely to get a really great speed, but perhaps good enough.

Some have reported getting around slow downloading by using a VPN.

It is also possible you might fare better with Galaxy.

Another downloader you can try, is Heroic, who have reportedly been in talks with GOG.

NOTE - Many folk around the world have this issue, even in similar locations to folks who don't have the issue. Most folk don't seem to have the slow speed issue, though they have noted a significant drop in speed.

If I was to speculate, I would say it is all due to GOG cutting costs with servers etc.

Not all of us. I keep getting a solid 60MB/s (~500Mb/s) from GOG servers.

I get good download speeds as well.

Unfortunately this is something that does not have an easy answer as there can be many factors in play causing issues, some could be something GOG can do, some things the user can do, and then some things that are due to other sources from geographical locations, service providers, additional programs being used that could throttle speeds, the infrastructure of the area you live in, etc.

Yeah, no, fuck that noise. Getting slower download speeds via website in comparison to Galaxy on the very same connection is a thing, for me and plenty of others. That is very much a GOG issue.

1. Let GOG support know of your issue, and say you are downloading on Linux so they can't tell you to use Galaxy instead. (If enough people use this excuse, I wonder if they will finally make a Linux version of the client?)

2. Force GOG to use some other Fastly CDN server than what it normally connects you to, by using e.g. a hosts file.
This is a bit more involved process and a hit & miss experiment, which might or might not help you.

This reminds me that it would be nice to gather some kind of list what Fastly CDN servers people use, and what kind of download speeds they are getting there. People have earlier mentioned some of their server IP addresses but of course it is quite hard to try to find them later on...

And maybe those lucky ones with good browser download speeds don't necessarily want to share their servers as then everyone would flock to them and then everyone has poor speeds and no one is having fun anymore.

I just wish gogrepoc and/or lgogdownloader developers would figure out how to use the Akamai CDN with their tools, maybe that would help with those tools specifically. Naturally it still wouldn't help people who want to use a browser for the downloads, not a third-party tool (even if it isn't Galaxy).

That did not help me at all, and I tried many ... most were just plain worse.

No problem, I understood that was what you actually wanted to say. I shared my experience just so other people could understand that this is not something affecting literally everyone.

(I think this is an important point, because this is surely something GOG would use as an excuse here)
