Very disheartened and disappointed with the functionality of GOG in China. You offer Chinese translations of games so I see you are trying to court this market. Are you aware that your site is almost completely unusable for users on the mainland who don't use a VPN?

I get a "Website not found" error when I try to download files directly from the game page. This has been an ongoing issue. I stopped buying games from you as a result of not being able to access my purchases.

I managed to download Galaxy a few days ago. I don't know why your website decided to start working for me. I decided to test it out and download Panzer General 2 and it worked! I got excited, maybe I can use GOG again!

I went ahead and bought The Witcher 1 and The Witcher Adventure Game. The Adventure Game downloaded and plays fine. I was on a roll... I decided to pre-order The Witcher 3. It started downloading without any issues. I believe it has finished I've got a 24.5GB numbered folder in my GOG folder.

Whenever I start up Galaxy now it tells me I need to update it. Fine. It starts downloading and the crashes at 1mb (of 3mb) telling me to download the full version from the website.

Now the website is acting up again and giving me "website not found" errors when I try to download the client. Same thing happens when I try to download games. When I use Galaxy to try to get games, I get a "game not supported" error for any games I try to download or install.

I'm getting frustrated and annoyed. I have Steam and it works fine, but I support GOG''s mission statement and I would prefer they get more of my money. I've paid a good deal of money to this site over the years for games that I cannot play. I would like you to sort out whatever problems you are having in China.

Living in China I realize this isn't 100% your fault, the internet in China is unreliable. Sites with twitter, facebook and google widgets have technical issues or are outright blocked.

But I still feel that it's dishonest to take my money and advertise Chinese versions of games with no way to download and enjoy my purchases.

Can you guys upload a torrent file with the newest version of Galaxy in it? What about some kind of private torrent tracker (don't upload the files to the server you use now, anything I try to get from cdn.gog.com/ .... is a dead link for me), Otherwise I see no other choice other than to pirate on day 1. I don't want to do it but I'm out of options.

Sorry for the long rant. Just anxious to get my Witcher 3 on like everyone else.

I don't think it's GOG's fault, I think it's more the Great Firewall of China.
Last week direct download from the website (cdn.gog.com/ ....) still worked, but for the last few days it's completely "dead". End of last year it happened already but was fine again after a few days. Hopefully it's only a temporary problem again.

It's just a bit strange that usually when something is blocked by the GFW you get a "connection reset" or "connection time-out" error. But when I try to download from GOG now, I get a "404 - File not found" error. So it can't be 100% excluded that the problem is on GOG's side. The other sections of the website (forum, library, store etc.) are working, "only" the downloads are broken.

Large part of your problem. Its why many people resort to using VPN's while visiting China.

How does that work exactly? Doesn't the connection need to get out in the first place to establish with the network? If there's a firewall....?
Maybe I'm thinking of North Korea and their independent network. Crap I'm running in circles now.

I really hope this is just a temporary thing. I'll keep plugging away I guess.

Sorry to hear you're having such a difficult time with accessing GOG at the moment. The best thing to do in a situation like this I believe is to contact the GOG technical support directly as they will be best equipped to investigate the issues and see if there is something going wrong on their end or not. GOG has great technical support so they'll do what they can to try to sort things out if possible. Give them a few days to be able to respond though as normally they respond in 24 or so business hours Poland time, but with the launch of The Witcher 3 they are probably going to be encountering a massive spike in support requests and they might take longer than usual to respond to everyone.

Hopefully it is a problem they're able to investigate and do something about for you though. Best wishes!

I'm definitely getting fed up with the internet here. I'd get a VPN right now but guess which sites they clamp down on very heavily? All the big name VPN sites are blocked. Unless you set it up while you're out of the country, you're left picking from some sketchier lesser known ones. Not exactly comfortable handing my CC over to some fly by night place.

Can I hear from someone using Astrill or another VPN? What are your download speeds like? Can you connect to Galaxy reliably? I was hitting 1mb per second when I was getting The Witcher 3. Not expecting the same speed with a VPN obviously.

I can go to a friend's house and try to download a VPN client and set it up but I'm not going to go through with it if GOG still won't work.

Did you contact the support?
Here other users from China could try to help you, but it's better to directly ask GOG's staff.

Hi,

I also live in China, I can't understand how do you survived until now without VPN!

I'm using Astrill and it's great on speed ( you can even watch streamings). I'm right now downloading TW3 at 2.5Mb/s.....
If you don't trust a VPN provider, you can get a cheap VPS and setup one yourself.

Good to hear that! Looks like I will be setting one up soon...

Cheers.

Just for the record and giving only my humble opinion: I don't think any human being would see this as piracy (only in a very technical sense) if you download a game you paid for before from another source on the internet then the official source which is somehow not available for reasons beyond your influence.

I would not say this is the solution to this problem. Less blocking of GOG in China would be better. But if no other solution happens until tomorrow, I would say, do it. You have paid for it. No reason not to do it.

Do you mean that it's not illegal there?
I expected like prison for it lol.

Hi,

*Operating* a VPN business without a license is clearly illegal under Article 7 of the Telecommunications Regulations passed by the State Council in September 25, 2000.

The regulations however do not make it illegal to *use* a VPN. They also do not make it illegal to use a VPN for personal purposes. And actually I pass half of the year in Europe also, so my subcription to a VPN service is justified as work purposes. Anyway, i belive there is not active catching of VPN using. Just active resarch of banned activities, like political opinions.
