Not to sound too blunt but let's remember I've asked you in another topic before what the magic words would be to get people to start caring about things they don't care about. You didn't have any. If you have them now, by all means, please share. If not, then please stop making this suggestion. Especially in regard to broader topics like DRM itself. But sticking with Downloader, the forum is home to the more old school users compared to social media platforms.

In this very forum, there are numerous users who don't care and in some cases who have basically mocked the pro-Downloader folks. Case in point, the reddit topic for getting rid of Downloader came and went a week ago, with none of the extremely negative feedback that we saw in the multiple Downloader topics here on the forum. So the users on social media would likely care even less than the users here on the forum.

As for earlier in the topic, I was making a point more from a practical perspective. You seem to be equating things that aren't the same. The people offering critical comments are hoping to get GOG to revert the change. Your comments are...complaining that people are doing so and trying to get us to go to social media so you don't have to read the complaints here. So my practical suggestion was to leave the topic since it's not for you.

People aren't going to stop complaining about this, at least not while it's still such a fresh issue. If you want to walk the talk and "be the change", why don't you go on GOG's social media and ask for new mod policies that don't allow for negative feedback. :p

I could likely think of some given time if anyone wanted to seriously pursue that avenue....but as of now it seems no one wants to go that route, so I felt it best to just make the suggestion atm.

What about anti-DRM groups(if any) or similar? What about YTers who rally for such gamers?

If there are any of those they might be worth a try by some others that might be more up to trying such.

I wasn't posting about ALL those doing so, just the few who were acting "crude"(for lack of a better term...dunno if that fits what I mean as good as it should) about it while doing so.

(Essentially it was the behavior of some which I was criticizing/trying to criticize rather than the people)

As for why I post in this thread: the topic interests me....all aspects of it, not just what I discussed....so I post replies when I have questions/suggestions or just want to reply ontopic a bit to others(and sometimes even just to post to others to pass the time or to vent on various things that fit the topic).

I want to, but:

1. I am one of those people that fears reprisals/counters to what I do(more so than is healthy).
2. I have no social media accounts(barring YT).
3. I am admittedly somewhat "lazy".

That said, I hope everyone here finds a new alternative to the GOG DLer(not galaxy per se), or some sort of answer or solution, or is able to move on if they choose to/want to do so.

I haven't really been reading every response (so I'm likely repeating things others have said), but that point about the !TEMP folder sticking around bought up another issue that I didn't realize, and that is that the GOG downloader will default to verifying the download if you attempt to download the same game again, while GOG Galaxy will attempt to download the game again from scratch (first it allocates the files and space in a !TEMP folder under the offline installer folder).

I had a look at the stellaris\!TEMP folder contents while downloading Stellaris via GOG Galaxy and noticed a few things:

1) It first creates a !TEMP folder under the default game offline installer folder (if it isn't there already).

2) It then allocates the necessary space by creating all of the files that are part of the download under the !TEMP folder. I think this is actually a bit of an improvement over the GOG downloader here, since it assigns all of the necessary space up front before attempting to download the game.

3) When each part of a download is finished it is moved from the !TEMP folder back into the main folder.

4) Once completed you are left with all of the game files under the main folder, with an empty !TEMP folder.

I could once again be wrong here, but I tested it by downloading XCOM 2 again and it ignored that the same files were in the main folder and recreated all of the same files under !TEMP again. It seems that GOG Galaxy doesn't check the main folder first to see if the installer is there before downloading it again.

I'm using an SSD, but it is a fairly old PC (less than a minute to start, but still far too slow for me). I'm aware of the Galaxy shortcuts since I had to redo a few of them myself, I just don't feel that GOG should do this by default. If I want to use GOG Galaxy to launch a game, I'll do it from there, but if I start a game while GOG galaxy isn't running, why would I want to start GOG Galaxy client first?

Seems a bit cheeky when you aren't given the option first (even if it is easy to fix).

This sucks. I haven't been using it or GOG for a while now, but the downloader was one of the last remnants of the monk-and-color-filled GOG that existed back when I signed up. Having it disappear feels like a part of this place's history that I really appreciated getting swept under the rug.

Isn't galaxy a steam clone? Why in the world would I use gog anymore if it's a copy of steam? Why would I install galaxy if I never will install steam? What's gogs logic here? They want the steam crowd and they want to get rid of us? I don't get it. On the other side gog made a lot of bad decisions lately... it's like they are trying to kill themself.

The one thing this means for sure is that I will buy less games on gog. If they make downloading them such a hassle I will only care about small and very special rare games. I guess that will cut my purchases down to 5% or something. And if they drop the manual drm free downloads I won't buy here anything ever anymore. But I am sure gog doesn't care about me.

To me this is a "defeatist" stance to hold....yes, you may be right, but some should still TRY and not just give up right out of the gate.

Also I think it's a good possibility such movements could work with the right people doing them, the eight words said, in the right places, etc.....of course, doing so is like putting lightning in a bottle for a good number of people.

A big voice/big name is still that, though(even if their stances don't align 100% with that of you or me or someone else)....and their popularity/reach could be a useful tool in such efforts..

Essentially it is in many ways, BUT galaxy isn't mandatory(for SP games) as of now....one can buy and DL and play without it if they so choose.

One good thing about Galaxy is that it updates your games automatically when you load it up. I like that feature and that's the only time that I use Galaxy is to update my games.
