I actually don't really like the term either. what is considered "political correctness" is actually far wider reaching than politics and politics is generally a giant pot of bs so in most cases, being politically correct would mean pandering, fear mongering, lying, and misinforming half the time.

I read it as not so much having to do with politics, but with being <i>politic</i>. (See sense 1.)
