I loved Darkwing Duck as a kid. That show really resonated with me.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned Courage the Cowardly Dog.

Speed Racer. First anime I ever watched; it's so old, in fact, that it predates the word "anime" itself.

And trippy? Even the bowlderized, kid-friendly version that aired on Saturday mornings had cars driving off cliffs and explosions galore. Plus, the episodes were shown out of order (story arcs weren't yet a thing in 1970s children's shows) so it was often hard to tell what was really going on. But for maximum trippiness, I recommend you watch the live-action 2008 movie.

Likewise with Battle of the Planets, which was the US kid-friendly version of Gatchaman. I have the anime on DVD, and was actually a little disappointed that the cutscenes featuring 7-Zark-7 weren't included. (They were added to the US version to extend the show's running time, since many of the battle scenes had to be cut down due to excessive violence).

Big fan as well of Heavy Metal, which mannefriedrich already mentioned. Saw that movie dozens of times during midnight showings in theaters, and bought it as soon as it came out on DVD.

And if we're going for out-there cartoon shows, no list would be complete without Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Venture Bros, and Invader Zim.

You would absolutely love Chick Tracts, then. It sounds like the American version of what you read, and they are so over-the-top that they're actually funny... especially since they were meant to be completely serious.

I have no idea if the guy was a Jehovah's Witness, but that is the first thing that occurs to me when I think of Christian types here who stand on the streets handing our something to bypassers.

The combination of black, redish and blue-ish looks right, but I don't think it was as cheesy or as old as Thundarr. The theme feels off. I vaguely remember it being quite melodramatic.

Can't believe those shows are nearly 20 years old! Cow and Chicken's first episode was 21 years ago :P

Have to second this. I think I didn't understand English back then. To this day I believe that made The Maxx even more enjoyable.

Sadly not no, we only got a select few episodes over here back then, and as a kid I didn't have access to the channel that showed most of them. Bravestarr luckily enough was one of the shows that showed on one of the normal channels that everyone had.

The first 15 seconds or so of Pandemonium looks similar to what I remember, but there definitely weren't any pandas in what I remember!
I fear that after so long my memory of the show has warped a lot, and it will be difficult to identify now since I can't remember a single concrete thing about any of the episodes. I think it involved a group of protagonists in a fantasy setting, and one might've been able to fly. What seems right was that it was a classic dark vs good nature struggle (kinda like Ferngully but with normal sized people on a fantasy world).
And for some reason the villain from Dungeons and Dragons looks familiar as well:

So it's entirely possible unfortunately that I'm just having a warped recollection of some weird dungeons and dragons episode. But apart from the villain, nothing else seems to fit.
