I thought it was released a about a week later but today is when it was said to be released back in 2008.

It would have been good to have a proper rival to WoW* but it had difficulties with the game and the business running it with criticism against the European server company.

Someones made a long video about it and how it ended.
You can skip ahead to 08:30 to get explaining the game.
30:17 is where it talks a little about EA.
Just before it he talks about how a third faction would have helped solve some issues. It was around this time back then I was thinking that it would have helped WoW to do the same with the goblins by having a mercenary faction where you could level any race with them to address their faction balance and dead server problems.

*whom they took some of the fun ideas from Warhammer, like public quests or kicking people off mountains or into lava

FOR THE WAAAGH!

It's still playable via emulation. I gave it a go recently. It's called simply "Return of Reckoning," but sadly, the amount of Empire/Dwarven/Elf "good" faction players outweighed the Dark Elves/Undead/Orks/Chaos so heavily, it was a bit of a cluster to do anything but solo PvE missions.

The atmosphere was decent, I will say that.
I was always far more interested in the original Warhammer Online that got cancelled..

I can't really remember the details now but I think it would have been awesome. I used to be quite active on the forums at the time and when it was cancelled they just scrapped the whole thing... I had some acquaintances there that I just completely lost touch with because of that.

Never actually played WAR, my interest in the original game was about as far as I ever got into MMORPGs. Despite being quite keen on the idea I've just never really had the time or energy to devote to that kind of game.

I wonder what that would have been like and if it would have suffered the same problems.

Are there custom servers for use on the players PC?

This game is the reason it baffles me people are expecting much from Mark Jacob's new PVP MMO. Does anyone seriously expect him to re-create a DAOC style game with a couple of million max when he miserably failed to do so with WAR which had 'South of a 100 million' spent on it.

The most grievous error was probably the two way combat. 3 Realms solved a ton of realm vs realm issues in DAOC.

I loved Dark Age of Camelot back in the day (till they destroyed my beloved Thidranki) but with every change they did after it had released it just became clearer and clearer they didn't really have a grasp of why their game was so good. Its creation was lightning in a bottle basically and WAR just re-confirmed that after I had already long moved to World of Warcraft after almost having given up on the genre with it's lackluster releases before that (Shadowbane especially was such a damn shame...). For me World of Warcraft was that one game that *did* actually make me relive my love for the genre. Haven't touched it since the second or third expansion but they were god damn good times, I still feel happy just listening to the OST sometimes.

I was playing WoW when it came out. I remember how the forums were hyped.

It was the same with Age of Conan and Aion.

I don't remember? It's possible, but it's also possible the admins were only supporting a few or one. It's been months since I checked in, but I know for a fact it's still kicking, as I've recently received an email from them in an attempt to entice me back.
