Morale is deadly in 8th. It's pretty common to run minimum size units unless you're specifically going for something like a massive Cultist blob, since otherwise you're just going to lose those points to a failed Leadership roll.

The lore is pretty damn dense, i wouldn't worry about it 'getting it' straight away. The best method i found was finding one faction/chapter or character and learning about them, they normally cross paths with each other and before you know it you have a pretty good understanding!

Lucian_Galca: I have almost no experience with the Warhammer universe, but the recent gog releases of the games gives me a place to start. Quite interesting.

Never cared much for the miniature collecting or tabletop-side of things but I've always been rather intrigued by the setting and the lore. Quite fascinating stuff one wouldn't expect from a concept as basic and simple as the grim dark future deadlocked in a state of never-ending, perpetual and omnipresent war.
Besides a few excursions into WH40K-related literature in the past (Dan Abnett's Eisenhorn/Ravenor novels in particular) nowadays it's basically reading up on things on the Lexicanum whenever I get the chance. There's always something to brush up on, learn more about or even something completely new you hadn't been aware of yet.
Playing (resp. replaying for the nth time) the WH40K-related titles available on here of course, too.
Also wouldn't mind another (CGI) venture into feature-length film like the Ultramarines one from almost 10 years ago at all. The prologue of 'The Lord Inquisitor' short from 2016 certainly looks promising, even though it's not feature-length.

Lucian_Galca: Yeah, that was my first impression after just looking a bit on a WH wiki page lol. And if all else fails, screw it, make up your own lore for your own army!

This is what I did, and I actually ended up winning a "design a Space Marine chapter" competition run by a major 40K YouTuber with it. :D
Information here, if anyone cares: https://www.reddit.com/r/40kLore/comments/8aiju5/winner_of_kirioths_space_marine_chapter/
EDIT: Image link seems to have died, so you can find one here. (It's from another post asking for C&C on my first completed model since getting back into the hobby.)

Well, for me Warhammer 40 000 was a computer game more than a tabletop one. My first meeting with that universe was by a "mistake" many years ago: guy who was selling CDs with game sold me Final Liberation as a next game in a Starcraft series. XD And after I got home there was two things revealed to me:
1. I was tricked and this game have nothing in common with Starcraft.
2. I like this game! And I don't care about Starcraft anymore. XD
And so it began: Chaos Gate, Rites of War... Then I discovered all the background info about universe and it was interesting and I really liked it!
In my opinion, background got slightly worse over the years and editions. For example, GW remade Primarchs from some horrible creatures into slightly modified humans. Intriguing silent Necrons was remade into generic Tomb Kings Army in Future.
But I still like this universe.
P.S. I really, really, REALLY hope that someone will make a Chaos Gate-style game with graphics and game mechanics if latest X-COM 2. :)

Psh, 40K ripped off StarCraft anyway. ;) 1. I was tricked and this game have nothing in common with Starcraft.

The mouldline on that last 'Stealer's face is upsetting to me, though. Is that an older one?
EDIT: Oh, and what did you use for the blood drip effect on the Hive Tyrant?
Cheers!
The blood effect is made by mixing Uhu glue with a little paint of water and the paint you want to use. I used the Blood for the blood guard texture paint from GW, with a tiny bit of black to lower the colour. From there it's just a case on putting it onto the model and dragging it down. You can use the method for toxic waste, ice etc etc. It's super cheap too. Though i does stink

tremere110: Lol, I remember the rumors that said that Starcraft started out as a WH40K game before a license got pulled. Don't know if there was any truth to that but it was still funny.
I think it was warcraft. Started out as a gamesworkshop title and then they had to break off and avoid using the original lore. Love the 40k wikis. Got lost in them for a while. Not familiar with 2nd edition. I think I played 1 game to someone who was obsessed with winning his game and doing cheesy moves rather than trying to accommodate me and my 2 friends.
Really enjoyed dawn of war 2, the loot generation system and also the voice acting/storylines. I think I replayed it once on hard difficulty and got repetitive strain injury on my mouse finger, a first for a gamer since the 90s.
Will need to try out space marine one day. Saw a letsplay but seemed to bore me. Also watched a letsplay, they had something that resembled diablo 2 the name of which escapes me, fun to watch, don't think I'd want to play that though. Might get around to playing that 40k panzer general game one day, certainly a lot of paid dlc going with that.

Blizzard obviously "inspired" themselves not only in Warcraft (they had to change some unit names and models in the Frozen Throne because of copyright issues (Steam Tank > Siege Engine)), but also in Starcraft through Warhammer 40K. Love the 40k wikis. Got lost in them for a while. Not familiar with 2nd edition. Space Marines, Dragoon = Dreadnaught, Protoss (Eldar), Dark Protoss (Dark Eldar), Zerg=Tyranids, Protoss basically do Exterminatus if they deem a planet unsalvagable. Yeah, it is pretty obvious.
It is always funny to see some Blizzard fanboy on the internet proclaim that Warhammer 40K ripped off Starcraft.
I also sometimes get lost on the wiki. Probably the most interesting universe I have encountered so far.
Dawn of War 1 is better. Definitely one of the top 3 RTSes of all time. You'd be doing yourself a disservice if you only played DoW 2.
I also didn't expect much from Space Marine but was nicely surprised. Played through it twice in a row.
That Diablo like game is Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor - Martyr
PS:
I have never collected the armies. My only contact with the WH 40K universe is through games and wiki.
