Here's a thread for all things 40K, one of my many gaming obsessions. Talk models, books, video games, board games, whatever. It's all good.

I started collecting 40K stuff more than 15 years ago. It was either third or fourth edition at the time, I don't recall. One of my sister's boyfriends liked 40K, and I naively bought him some Tau. I don't remember if he ended up giving them back to me or what, but Tau ended up being the first army I collected. Later followed by Orkz, Space Marines (Black Templars, White Scars, and my own custom chapter), Chaos Space Marines (currently Black Legion, Iron Warriors, Word Bearers, Emperor's Children, World Eaters, and Night Lords), Sisters of Battle, Thousand Sons, Death Guard, Adeptus Mechanicus, Renegades and Heretics, Eldar, and Dark Eldar. I probably missed something. I've also got some Tyranids in my closet from some eBay job lots, and I'm strongly considering picking up the Renegade box to add some Mechanicus Knights to complement my Armigers.

I'm pretty excited about the release of the new version of Kill Team. I've gone back and forth on the issue, and I think I'll order the Kill Team starter set for when I've finished with my current exams. I'd been considering just grabbing the book, but I figure I'll probably end up using the Genestealer Cult models to make a Necromunda gang. Kill Team doesn't have chapter/legion rules, so I think I'm going to be fun making mixed teams. I'd love to make an Alpha Legion Sniper, and I've been thinking up other characters to include.

A little birdie recently gifted me Space Hulk Ascension. If what I've read is anything to go by it's not fantastic, but I'm sure I'll enjoy it since I love Space Hulk. (I was actually a beta tester for the short lived fangame TearDown made, which got redone as Alien Assault.)

That is a lot of sequels!

And I thought Final Fantasy was getting out of hand!

Personally, I thought 6, 359, 7802, and 35467 were the best of the series.

Funny.

Incidentally, as of 8th edition they've finally advanced the story, so now they're no longer cramming everything into the year 40999. The "present" of the series is now something like the second century of the 42nd Millennium.

I'm still disappointed that Games Workshop took the license away from Fantasy Flight Games. They did some excellent boardgames for the 40K universe. I loved Forbidden Stars. I also enjoyed the Conquest card game.

Didn't Fantasy Flight start that fight by violating their agreement?

I greatly enjoyed Dark Heresy, incidentally. Looking forward to Wrath and Glory.

I used to play 40k way back when I was in college, my group of friends all played. I had a Black Legion CSM army, led by Abaddon, had Terminators, Obliterators, a Defiler, a Land Raider, a full squad of Bloodletters, a squad of Bikers with meltaguns, and of course standard marine infantry, all painted. My friends played Eldar, Space Marines, Imperial Guard, Necrons and Orks respectively. I sold the whole army on ebay like a decade ago now. I imagine 40k rules are much different now though.

There wasn't an agreement perse. It was just that when FFG entered the fantasy miniature wargame market GW realised they would be a competitor and decided not to renew the license. Can't exactly blame them for that - but I still would've liked to see a Forbidden Stars expansion, or ten :D

Played rogue trader tabletop in early 90s. Didn't like how they simplified the rules, but it did take yonks to prepare an army with all the options available at the time. Was hard getting access to book of the astronomicon. No Eldar pirates or mercenaries lists.

I am sure there is a version of Realms of Chaos Lost and the Damned with old style army lists. I know some of the contents of white dwarf 104 or 103 didn't make it into the main version.

Was fun. Got simplified. Too bad.

What did you collect?

Just started reading the Horus Heresy from the Black Bible, matter of fact. I keep Space Marine pretty much installed permanently on the HD. I've never gotten into collecting due to the cost barrier of entry and the fact that I really have no room for armies, but I've always enjoyed the lore of Warhammer both Fantasy and 40k immensely. (40K > Fantasy, imo.)

I've never played Space Marine, but that's quite the endorsement.

There's a bunch of 40K games in the current sale for like a pound each. I'm really digging the aesthetics of them and they sound pretty good. Think I'm going to grab them. :)

I also recommend Space Marine. Really makes you feel like a super soldier compared to the puny orks. If you are good enough, it feels absolutely awesome wading through scores of them without even getting scratched as you weave attacks and dodges with finishers and whip long range headshots with your bolter as you are closing in with your melee weapon. You feel like a godlike unstoppable killing machine. Also, the way the Imperial Guard react to you when they see you, an actual Ultramarine, is funny and fitting.
