You know, one thing is for them to make a bad remake. Whole another thing is making that remake also patch and affect your original game that you bought and you own and then mess around with various things, from game balance to custom campaigns. This is why GoG and DRM free versions are necessary.

It is, but it's not surprising. Starcraft does the exact same thing.
With Warcraft 3 I may actually have to dig up my old CDs, patch them to whatever the last "offline" patch was and try to at least change the voices to English. No widescreen this way but at least I know that the game would not suddenly stop working.

I totally agree, but at least on my Mac, I have two files: "Warcraft III", and "Warcraft III launcher". The launcher file does try to force an update and not let you play if you cancel. The Warcraft III file however just runs the game directly and it works normally without trying to update. As long as you stay off Battle.net, that is, otherwise it tries the update thing. But at least single player works and probably LAN, though I didn't test that. So it's not quite as bad as I thought. Still not really acceptable overall.

Edit: the "last modified" date is November 27, 2018, so it has the widescreen support. Saves me from having to find my CDs, especially since I'm pretty sure that version wouldn't work on the current macOS anyway.

Which is sadly quite the price to pay. Before I cancelled my reforged pre-order I could update WC3 to proper widescreen resolutions and it was, regretably, incredible. Hopefully a crack will become available soon now that a ton of players it seems have jumped ship.

The CD version + latest offline patch can run in widescreen.

As I mentioned before, the game executable does not work for me any more. I believe it may actually be on a timer before it needs to reauthenticate. Admittedly I haven't touched the game in some 8 months or so, but it used to work then without problems.

No I meant the last time I checked the whole game was stretched (both models and UI). What you linked appears to fix the models issue but still has interface stretch (that's the impression I've got from the screens, I haven't tested it either).
That's what I thought as well. The game still has a separate executable and used to work without Internet and didn't require Battle.net login. It just stopped working. And after logging to BN (which I keep exclusively for Starcraft 2), of course the Reforged "update" started downloading automatically. Guess it's time to uninstall WC3.

I've just tried it: some parts of the UI are still stretched (the icons), the rest looks fine. Still, a shame.

I don't get why Blizzard added widescreen resolutions in patch 1.25... but it just stretches everything. That's one of the most basic functions of any widescreen monitor.

You can turn off automatic updates in the settings. At least in my case I got to keep Warcraft 3 as it was, but I'm done with Blizzard now. Not that I've bought anything from them since Starcraft 2 anyway.

Behold my so called "hot take" (or is it an onsen temperatured take?) after having watched a couple of streamers stream the game.

Its a really bad remake, but not as much as people seem to rage on about. Personally, I think calling the remake the "worst video game ever made" is a bit of a stretch here. IMHO this game deserves a 4-out-of-10 rating or even slightly worse, but not the 0.5 or so that it has on metacritic, which would imply that the game barely works while having severe issues on every thing, even the stuff that works. Thats even worse than Big Rigs, a game that barely works so well that it created a mock-religion around it.

I can understand people being angry though as a remake should always be "above" the quality of the original in terms of what it offered back then during its apex. So I would've expected at least a 9-out-of-10 game here.

But perhaps I'm wrong and theres something severely wrong about the game that only shows up while you have personally the hands on the game and are not just watching people playing it. I do agree that Blizzard/Activision fucked up big time, especially the facts such as that you want to play the original you must use the reforged edition now is pretty terrible. Its how people stated years earlier, we will see a decline in "playerrights" as games will be owned by the company even if you bought the game. Still, this belongs more to terrible business practices from Activision (as the thread creator stated) rather than blaming the flawed game itself and those contractors working on it with what they were offered.

I'm so disappointed with this - WC3 and mods hold a special place in my gaming history.

I stopped playing/using/purchasing from Battle.Net around the time Blizzard showed us the finger with Diablo Immortal aka 'Do you not have PHONES???' mobile insanity.

Still see no reason to go back there. Though dat Diablo 4....
