I feel like playing some military FPS. havent played one in a while and since it is not genre I normally play my backlog lacks any unplayed games.

Hence I am asking for recommendations.

What i seek:

War. There must be clear presence of war. Something like Crysis is not adequate as it is just a conflict not proper war among nations.
Great single player campaign . I am not interested in MP at all.
Non-COD as they are fairly expensive (and old ones which are priced normally are too old) EDIT: They are on sale on steam so they are temporary an option
Published in past 10 years.
Must be either available on GOG, Origin or Steam.

I am considering buying Hell's Highway as it had been on my radar since release but I had somehow never purchased it.

Thx for the help :)

Rainbow Six 3. Nuff Said:

http://store.steampowered.com/app/19830/

And best install the Raven Shield 2.0 mod aswell:

And I am still waiting for GOG to get this underrated gem here :(

To me, the first obvious answer is Vietcong, but having been released in 2003, it's probably too old for you.
After that, there's always the Operation Flashpoint/Arma series from Bohemia Studios

Steer clear from Commandos - Strike Force.

It doesn't fit the first criterion (war). And I'm still waiting for the Ghost Recon add-ons. How many years has it been already, five?
Yes, Operation: Flashpoint / ArmA series. Tons of community content available for all of them.
Definitely play the Brothers in Arms games especially the older ones http://store.steampowered.com/sub/1847/

Medal of Honor Airborne http://store.steampowered.com/app/24840/

Battlefield Bad Company 2 http://store.steampowered.com/app/24960/

If you do get a CoD game I recommend World at War http://store.steampowered.com/app/10090/
yeah. Rainbow Six does not fit what I am looking for.

Arma is interesting. Shame it is not on GOG. Will wait for it whenever it appears.

Bad Company 2 is not only MP? How's the single player?
Battlefield 1942.
It's on Origin and is free.

amrit9037: Battlefield 1942.

Lack of proper singleplayer mode.

They used to be here, but they got pulled for some reason .

That depends on perspective. It lacks a story, but the BF1942, BF Vietnam and BF2 games where the only ones where you could pick any map of your choosing to battle bots in a free roaming battle instead of following a rail-roaded story. BF1942, Vietnam and 2 I played again and again for that reason, BF3 only once.

BF1942 is pulled from the Origin store though, together with BF Vietnam and BF2 when Gamespy shut down. They could've just left it on Origin for the single-player, even though finding servers online with Gamespy doesn't work no more. I'm still sad I didn't grab myself a disc-check free copy of BFVietnam from Origin. If you ever find a BF2 disc version, it's disc-check DRM and online activation of DLC's was taken out of it with the latest patch 1.5.

As for story-driven war shooters, I can recommend the Operation Flashpoint series as well, especially Red River as even though the war in it is fictional, the game takes a lot of effort to make it a believable conflict. You get the feeling you are actually fighting in a real conflict between nations that follows it's own agenda instead of the 'war' just being a backdrop for some shoot-em-up. The story is far more coherently told than in games like Battlefield 3 and 4. Operation Flashpoint is a hardcore game though, I myself quit halfway for the game becoming too difficult, even on easy.

Like ChorizoConWebo said: Both Bad Company 2 and Medal of honor Airborne are pretty good and a bit unfairly forgotten since they have some of the best SP in the series.

The wolfenstein games (return to, wolfenstein reboot, new order, old blood) All of them are worth playing IMO

...
That was such an excellent game though. One of the most memorable and most tense single player fps experiences. Highlights included defending that hilltop and being lost in the jungle at night trying to reach an lz
I'd also like to give a shout out for Medal of Honor : Airborne. I remember it had an incredibly fun sp campaign.

However my first choice would definitely be : Brothers in Arms

Also, don't be so quick to dismiss the old CoDs. The original might well be a bit old by now, but it's expansion, United Offensive (2004) still holds up extremely well I think. Just watch this gameplay from the first mission https://youtu.be/NOgKJX1adn8?t=250

Actually United offensive made no sense at all, you played a Brit jumping out of a B-17 on a daylight raid over the Netherlands, while first the Brits didn't use B-17's and didn't go on daylight raids after early 1940, second the Netherlands don't look like Tirol.

It was a big gap between the other two CoD's which may not have been entirely historically accurate but at least didn't require a leap in suspension in disbelief and that is not what you play a game set in a historical setting for.

Strijkbout: - Medal of Honor: Allied Assault + Pacific Assault
- Call of Duty 1+2
- Brothers in Arms series
- Snipers series
- Vietcong 1+2
- Men of Valor
The above, first MoH games are great, first two COD games are the only good ones.
There is also:
- Vietcong - Purple Haze
- Battlestrike games
- WW2 Iwo Jima, and Normandy
- Code of honor series not great but ok)
- Deadly Dozen - Pacific Theatre

If your ok to go slightly out of reality, then Return To Castle Wolfenstein.

Several others I could mention, but not so good.
