Fenixp: Nah, the original Doom 3 definitely did not have subtitles. I still prefer the original to BFG edition tho, BFG edition got somewhat rebalanced and a good deal of that game loses its impact when you can have weapon and a flashlight out at the same time

omega64: The brightness was also upped, lowest brightness for my monitor, lowest brightness ingame.
How is it still too bright. >_<
Perhaps you have exceptionally good night vision. You should also be able to adjust things in your graphics card settings.

I didn't have that issue with the original. Flashlight is just way too bright in BFG :(

If it's as bad as you say, surely someone created a mod for it?

It's been quite a while since I played it.
Probably should've searched for one. >_<

I didn't like the bfg edition. It was also easier.
Things wrong with Doom 3:
1) It's too dark, why can't I see shit?
2) Why can't I tape my torch to my gun?
3) Oh great ANOTHER boring long recording which tells me the code to the ammo box, I want to kill demons
4) Oh great another jump scare, very clever, very creative
5) CAN'T SEE SHIT CAPTAIN

Bad wannabe horror game

Oh.. well than I have zero interest in it.
I've never quite understood the closet monster complaint. Hell, Doom 1 & 2 have plenty of those as well.

I sure wouldn't mind seeing the original Doom 3 + expansion here. I've quite enjoyed it in the past, so I certainly wouldn't mind replaying it. It certainly has a very nice atmosphere.

Basically all of these things were fixed in the BFG edition. Lighting was changed, shoulder-mounted tortch added, better resolutions for clearer picture, etc.

Most would argue that these changes were bad for the game though, but I'm sure plenty of people differ. If Doom 3 is a "bad wannabe horror game" what the heck would you consider a good one?

Well, Doom 1 and 2 had levels designed purely to convey great gameplay, whereas Doom 3 is trying to be a lot more believable. That's why monster closets don't work so well anymore.

Did it get rid of the PDA and recordings/emails?

Amnesia TDD

Doom is a shooter about killing demons with cool weapons and collecting keycards in well designed maps.

I quite enjoyed Doom 3, even if it didn't feel like Doom at all. Perhaps it felt a bit more like a Quake game? (premise excluded of course). Quake IV on the other, is one of the most fun FPS campaigns I've ever played.

Of course Amnesia is a great horror game, it's like the pinnacle of the genre. Outlast is a pretty good one as well, I own both. At the end of the day though, your right, Doom is a shooter (with horror elements) and it has been since the original; knocking it because it's not as good of a horror game as Amnesia is comparing apples to oranges.

What do you think about the Dead Space games? They're about the closest thing out there to Doom 3 (imo a "bad wannabe Doom 3" though, but they do have more plot).

Horror elements?! Maybe for Doom 64 (in terms of the new soundtrack and atmosphere, but in a very minor way) but original Doom and Doom 2 there was nothing remotely scary about the games, nor did they try to be.
