Embracer Group is shutting down the 30-year old studio Volition (Freespace, Red Faction, Saints Row...).

Source
Shame as the Volition of old made a lot of fun games.

Bioware seems to be on the tipping point with EA right now also with recent layoffs.

I hate it when these big publishers buy studios just to shut them down.
I think of all their games I only ever played Saint's Row 2, for like 5 minutes, and decided I absolutely hate it, and that was it, so I'm not exactly heartbroken. Even so, seeing any studio die to the tune of that vomit-inducing corpo-speak is kind of depressing. Seriously, that announcement sounds like something out of a RoboCop style dystopian parody.

No surprise and, sorry but not sorry, nothing of value lost, especially considering the abomination that is the Saints Row reboot.
Should also serve as a cautionary tale for other developers/publishers thinking about rebooting any of their intellectual properties of old for "modern audiences and sensibilities" or generally in such a way that the reboot would be the exact polar opposite of what the franchise's preceeding installments used to be.
Get woke, go broke.

Instead of pushing political, feminist, LGBTQ agendas, the company should have made a good saints row reboot which sold well, then this fiasco would have never happened.
No wonder and good riddance. The only sane step that could be taken.

That's what happens when you're too busy making a political statement instead of a good game. At least their old games before they went down the shitter, are great. Summoner, Freespace, Red Faction, definitely recommend those.

Maybe now, someone who respects these franchises can give them a go. Volition obviously no longer did.

It's not Embracer's fault that Saint's Reboot was made.

It is actually.

The publisher that pu listed the game isn't at fault for commissioning it?
Volition made a few games I quite enjoy -- Red Faction Guerilla and Summoner being two of the best. At one point they reminded me a lot of Pandemic.

Sorry to see them go... but... like many longtime development studios, seems the new blood hasn't made content that gamers -- or fans of Volition's past games -- want.

Huh, they made that Punisher game that quite a few people want here.

I wouldn't be against Agents of Mayhem and the Saints Row reboot showing up despite the mixed and negative receptions (but that's how I feel about basically all games anyway :P), but if we're talking games published by Deep Silver in general, I'd actually buy Dead Island 1.

Holy shit, I only just found out today that Volition was Parallax Software! You learn something new every day...though I'm trying hard to think of what I learnt yesterday and the day before. Stupid saying. They actually made some good games. Everything dies eventually.
They ultimately deserved to close down tbh.
Sucks we're never ever getting that SR2 patch.
