snowkatt: well there was a mass emigration to australia program but i am unclear on the details
I think it was called "grand larceny".
avatar
zeogold: I thought that's because everything in the country is trying to kill them.

snowkatt: both ;p
The alcohol might help a little bit, too.
Speaking of which:

Crosmando: I hope Valve never does business "officially" in Aus, because all it would mean is more taxes and higher prices.
And you dont think we get charged enough for a raft of games on Steam already....

Let me guess, he'll (of course it'll be a him, everyone knows a Sheila can't be a real Aussie) be wearing a cork hat, drinking a Foster's, eating a Vegemite sandwich, and be wrestling a saltwater crocodile, all while having a stingray impaled in his chest (too soon?). Straya, mite.

lol

Bigs: We already pay inflated prices (in USD) with currency conversion thrown on top... it couldn't really get any worse... if anything they may bring in AUD and prices at least on par with EB games (and preferably JB Hifi) if they did...
Believe me, you aren't the only ones hurt by the USD conversion, especially in light of the fact that wages are not converted, only prices :P.

Makes me wish there were more Canadian companies doing server hosting.

Do you get stung by regional pricing though?
We often have to pay $20+ more on top of the USD price - in USD - THEN deal with the currency conversion as Steam does not as yet allow for payment in AUD

There has always been rumors about prices on Steam for Aussies have been linked to EB etc wanting prices on par (EB and Valve in collusion) with in store prices ---- > it would explain why we still pay stupendous prices compared to much of the world (even tho i rarely if ever buy anything from steam anymore).

Numerically they are... but on Steam they are in USD... so with an unfavourable exchange rate we pay more...

While EB is a ripoff in its own right... since the prices are in AUD you still pay less than on Steam directly

One thing i noticed weird on Steam in Australia was Civ5...... it stayed expensive on Steam for years..... usually the price comes down as it gets old.... NOPE not for Australia.

So while Civ5 was still 80 something bucks on steam after 4 years.... i went to the retail store in Australia, bought it for 30 bucks, then registered it in Steam.

I don't know much about how it all works,,, but for all that above crap to happen..... it tells me something very dubious is going on with Steam in Australia
Whenever I see a thread like this I can't help but think of this movie. :-)

No that is actually standard for the entire world.

It is a common misconception that Steam is Cheap.
For 20 days a year a game may be cheap, but for the rest of the Year they've over priced compared to their physical counterpart (either on PC or console).

Prices are set by the publishers, and with infinite stock and none of the normal market factors that reduce price, they have no impetus to change them.

CIV5 is just one of many games where the publisher took a 1/3 of the price a year after release and left it. Call of Duty is worse, last time I looked the 5 year old game is still asking its original release price.

When you put it like that... you win. I will count my blessings that I only have to deal with currency conversion (though it is still steep atm at ~0.75 CAD per USD).
