Daniel_Newhouse: When you create a party in Eye of the Beholder, elves do not show up as little green men. This expectation comes from the Lord of the Rings (1990) for DOS, when you are attacked by an orc after meeting Hawkeye the ranger.
Imagine confusing an orc with an elf.

Daniel_Newhouse: Source port, that's what is called?
Yes, that is correct:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Source_port

Many games have them, so that those games can be played on all operating systems.

Look at the list on the Wikipedia page you posted - that's not many, that's "a few" (compared to the list of all old games that have been released for an old OS).

Even in the simplest source port, you need a rack module to transfer the BGM properly.

DOSBox -X has better audio than DOSBox, but it is not as compatible. They have put out a few new revs, but version 83.11 is the last working version.

Try waiting until the acid wears off before posting again. Games that NEED "rack modules" to play audio don't exist.

Also, the MT32 and such aren't rack modules and can perfectly be replaced with Munt.

Daniel_Newhouse: The use of DOSBox is annoying. I know why its there. When you create a party in Eye of the Beholder, elves do not show up as little green men. This expectation comes from the Lord of the Rings (1990) for DOS, when you are attacked by an orc after meeting Hawkeye the ranger. Ir was a hope that the display would change completely.
Are you high? You can play EoB on ScummVM too btw.
DosBox is great. How else can I play one of my all-time fave games. Carrier Command.
Eye of the Beholder never supported LA synthesis. I don't know if you could have ever connected an external sound module to support OPL2 midi.

Has anyone ever tried that?

Given that most Midi Modules were never aimed at the consumer market, I do fear you maybe asking the wrong crowd.
Try VOGONS.
