Terrible, devastating loss. Such a wise and talented writer. I aboslutely love her Earthsea books, especially the very first one that I read as kid. One of those books that had great influence on me. But even those novels pale in comparison to the Hainish Cycle. The Left Hand of Darkness is one of the greatest books I have ever read, easily in my top 5. It's one of the very few that are so great I'd almost call them haunting, as I never quite entirely stopped thinking of it ever since I read it.

I guess the only consolation is that there's still more books by her I have not yet read. For a while.

Sad news indeed. I, too, love the Earthsea series as well as the novels that I've read of the Hainish Cycle.
NO!

She was one of my favourite authors...
At the age of 10 I picked up "The word of Unbinding" and entered the reality of Ursula, it's a sad day....no one will be able to take the mantle she wore.
She made me want to write and tell stories just like she did, and 40 years later I embarked on my own journey of writing, to this day I still feel it's not ready for the rest of the world.
Sigh. RIP

...Surprised she only wrote 20 novels? (yes article points out over 100 short stories but still... 20 novels is pretty low everything considered)
RIP
It's always a shame when an author dies. You always wonder what else they might have written.

I only have ten (that I could quickly find) books by her but I liked them all but one, The Lathe of Heaven. That one was more disturbing to me than The Left Hand of Darkness ever was but I did not get anything out of it but feeling ill at ease.

There are a total of six books in the Earthsea saga and I have yet to find and read the last one.

Now I feel silly for weeping when she was so old already. I guess it is just selfishness.

May your next life be a good one, Ursula!
God rest her soul.

I'm sorry, but is that really necessary here and now?

He's obsessed with his gender. Best to just ignore him.

Yeah, that's exactly how social justice and feminism ruin the stories. Authors (writers, scriptwriters, gamedesigners) waste so much time and effort to make their work politiaclly correct, so it's just not enough of them left to actually make a good story.
Seriously... one of the greates writers of our time, and you can't keep this crap to yourselves even this once. Oh, a great writer has died, this looks like the perfect soapbox for me and an opportunity for more online bickering!

How about you try and not make me ask for the thread to be closed?
