If I purchase the standard version and decide I want to upgrade to Ultimate at a later date, is it possible?

I can not answer you, but some GOG games provide upgrade path, while some others never provide it.

Wasteland 2 and Torment: Tides of Numenera from the same developer (inXile Entertainment) have upgrade paths on GOG, so probably yes.

There is no possibility to upgrade from one version to another. That being said, if you decide you want to upgrade you might consider writing to Support about it, perhaps they could help you out :)

Seriously? I'm assuming GOG is just selling the game the way inXile wants them to (Steam also seems to lack an option to upgrade), but this is just dumb.

So I guess people who don't want to put down $80 right off the bat are stuck hoping things change.

Another pre-order I regret doing. I know it's not GOG's fault but if things don't change I will have to request a refund on this game (I didn't download a single thing yet). I'd rather give my money to someone that isn't trying to screw me over.

I'm not 100% sure but I think this company has done this model of pricing for all their games so far.

Not Buying a game until all the dlc has been released and bugs have been removed (Definitive/Game of the year edition etc) > Buying game after it is released > Preordering

And, reading review around, the game is crap.

Up to now, inXile didn't manage to impress me with good games.

Mostly they screwed up on most game they have done.

To clarify, it's not possible to upgrade this particular game (but if you were to write to Support, they could probably convert your purchase to Wallet Funds so you could get a different version) but many other titles have available upgrades on GOG.com - typing 'upgrade' in the search box of our store will show you just how many :)
