Going to update my Windows 10 Education from version 1803 from 2018 to 22H2 today, an update spanning 8 major version releases. Wish me luck. Hopefully my PC doesn't brick :P

Gonna suck having to disable all the tracking and telemetry again, which is why I was postponing this update for as long as possible, because it gets reset with every update.

I recommend this tool for disabling all the BS in Windows 10 and 11.
Update went surprisingly smooth, took about 15 minutes to install after downloading.

Yeah, I've used it before, but only after having fiddled with some settings myself beforehand. Will use it this time right from the get go and fine-tune after. Thanks for the reminder.

EDIT:
Oh, the O&O actually detects which settings got changed by Windows after the update and allows quickly restoring to the previous settings. Very nice.

All I had to do was to set Telemetry in Group Policy to level 0 and that's pretty much it.

Smoother than expected.

EDIT 2:
One thing of note, the update re-enabled the horrendous DTS Audio. Had to turn it off again.

Samer here. i had to upgrade it windows 10 this april as most games are pretty much dx12 exclusive at this point and steam was dropping support for Windows 7 as well.
Boy am I ever glad to be sittin' pretty with DNF5 these days. It's crazy fast since it's coded in C++, instead of whatever high level garbage that Microsoft uses.
Should you ever move to W11...

... be careful.

I know people who have new systems and lost all of their data and have severe continual issues since. And each update "breaks" their systems yet again.

In fact here's an MS thread on the problem(s) titled "Windows 11 broke my PC!:

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/windows-11-broke-my-pc/3d702aa9-4b3f-48f0-94a9-3c7e2356b5dc?page=1
I've had instances where my mouse won't click half the time I left click or right click,
the mouse just doesn't wanna work.

I seem to get the idea that everyone has different settings on Windows 11, too
--- My friend has different ones then I do
--- Maybe different hardware Unlocks hidden Windows 11 features?

I've seen Windows 11 Menus that go nowhere, Menus that go backwards instead of forwards

The Desktop Log-In Screen is most annoying, you load a dark screen,
which then loads another dark screen, then you click a Window & that goes away,
now it loads a black screen, then it loads a white box, this is where you type in
your password, now it loads that same white box all over again, this is now where
you are presented with your Windows 11 Desktop. If your booting the Computer
after it's been off for a while, you still have to remember your Bios also has to load
before all this can even accure at all.

It's not like Windows 10, where it boots the Bios, then you click a window,
& your Log-In Screen is already there, before loading your Desktop. Windows 10
has way less loading at the Boot Screen. Windows 10 is way less annoying.

I dunno, Windows 11 is just not a Windows, I just don't like it.

Yo done? i wouldn't recommend for the time being lmao.. Yeah 22H2 is the last major update to win 10. So i also thought like you and updated after a long time but been facing issues with the network(keep disconnecting and connecting for every 2 mins smh) after that. I thought it might be an issue with my wifi and all but faced the same with mobile hotspot. Thought about reverting it back but just waiting if it goes normal again. I'd recommend you to wait if you havnt updated yet for some time. Don't know if i'm the only one with that issue but better wait.

Well, what you see there sounds as if you are not using Windows 11 at all.

Dark screens can appear when the graphics driver initializes, changes frequency or whatever and your monitor needs a second to adjust.
This happens between boot screen and login, but not after that.

And I have a hard time to immagine how a menu can go backwards.

Windows 11 does use more 3D elements than previous versions, mostly when it comes to overlays. Also it's support for FSR is much more advanced, there are mechanisms to detect when it could be needed. But as a result I noticed screen initialization when I switched applications that use a OpenGL renderer to fullscreen.
What I had to do was to set XnViewMP to native video rendering and Ren'Py games to Angle rendering instead of auto (which would choose OpenGL). For 2D applications I really need no fullscreen effects.

I tried not to Update, & leave my Windows 10 Offline,
even if I do Update? I still got till the 2025, & if something
does go well? In 2025 it won't matter anymore.

I can always revert back like you said, but that doesn't
mean that the Updates will just go away, right?

Or I could just ignore the Updates all together, & stay Offline.

For those who don't have many Options on the table,
i'd suggest getting a 2ndary Device for Internet & use
the older Device Offline, or simply Update to 22H2
& just deal with whatever problems that you can.

I have a Desktop Computer with Win10 2016,
& a Laptop Win11 2023...

My Desktop Computer is Offline & my Laptop is Online.
Why? Cause the Laptop is cheaper, & if something breaks,
at least it's the laptop, not my Desktop.

GuRuAsaki2098: I tried not to Update, & leave my Windows 10 Offline,
You try to keep Win 10 offline...that is a possibility. But I will not recommend to use Win 10 or Win 11 at all:
https://web.archive.org/web/20180102170952/https://www.privacytools.io/#win10
Haremhab:

Reason I didn't make a fuss about Windows 10, was that it supported 8K Resolution...

I wanna try a sorta City Building Game at 8K Resolution...

However, I also do my own Art, so I wanted to explore 8K Resolution on Windows 10.

--------------

Outside of that? I Agree Windows 10 is dislikable & Windows 11 is even worst.

Luckily, Windows 10 Vanilla was already quite good and software standards are more established.
I was honestly surprised how little the latest version changed it's API from the first one, so "most" programs run just fine on vanilla.

With Windows XP or Windows 7 you need to upgrade to the latest versions in order to run all software.
XP SP3 was very different from the vanilla version, but also Win7 SP1 could have significant differences (not really for games, but for professional software).

Windows XP & Windows 7, your right they had Service Packs
that more modern things Required to work.

Windows 10 doesn't have this, but the problem still exists,
where more certain Programs will require a certain Update,
like for instance? Yuyu or Ryujinx Requires 22H2 Update I think,
or an it required Update Fall Creators Update 2018, & you
can't get this Update once Windows 10 has it's Support Dropped
just as you can't get Service Pack 1 / 2 on WinXP & Win7 after
the Support drops for those.

It's a problem for anyone who wants to stay on older Systems.

Hopefully, we can find a work around for this soon.

Well, Windows 10 just calls these differently, but the update packs are basically the same thing with the difference that Windows 10 always performs a full upgrade instead of just installing the packs.

Microsofts "Last Windws ever" campaign was one of the dumbest things to do, if you ask me. It made work for support a lot harder since they had to get the customer to look for the installed version.

I am not aware however of many programs that would really require a certain update. They do exist of course, you just named some.
But I had the opinion that it was mostly function and security updates that got introduced since the launch.
