Techniques for selecting winners is going to be undisclosed until the giveaway ends, this way the results don't get skewed. I do have an idea of how i'm going to finish it (course if it gets too complex i may just do it randomly)

Japaneese Cross Knot: Technically the Square knot, but in the USA the reef-knot somehow got named the square knot (which is annoying and confusing). I like the knot because not only is it square shaped and fairly easy to use, i found a way to tie it fast, consistent,and adjust it in order to make bottle nets which i've found useful (also made a Hammock).

No single knot has saved my life or been that important yet, but i found once i started learning knots i found interesting ways to use them on a daily basis that i never thought of before in my 30+ years of being alive.

I always liked the Prusik. This knot is pretty versatile in its usage, both for safety (e.g. when abseiling) and utilization (e.g. to climb a rope).

The knots I use most are the granny knot /shoelace knot. They are quick & easy and hold most things together so - Why knot?

I used to do macrame crafts, but that's so long ago I remember it knot. ;)

Something to consider, i've read and heard in various definitions a good knot is one you can easily untie (even when it's been under load) while a poor knot you can't. The Overhand & Granny knots are examples of bad knots... I think they both also reduce the strength of your cord/rope by 50% or more.

What would you suggest in the place of Granny & Overhand knots? Anything relatively simple available?

Figure 8 (which can also be a slipknot), reef knot, , and [url=http://www.animatedknots.com/bowline/index.php]bowline. I've even used the square knot (Japanese Cross knot). But it really depends on what you're needing it for... Clove hitch and Lark's head are both useful too. Curiously the name of the knot may change depending on what you attach it to.

Firstly, I "learned" a lot of knots when I was a kid and I'd like to say that the passage of time is why I don't know so many now. The truth is, I could never remember the damn things in the first place; and it was infuriating! Thanks for bringing up childhood trauma, rtcvb32 :P

My favourite knot is the Sheep Shank, mainly because of its funny name and that it's used to shorten rope. I like a nice, compact rope.

The knot that has served me best is the half windsor. Unless you're in the naval industry, knowing how to look sharp is probably more handy than knowing the difference between a bowlin' with bight and a Karash double. Though the full Windsor is arguably the nicer looking tie, there's something to be a said for a style you can tie one-handed in under ten seconds while driving.

I learned a whole lot of knots in my time in the military - but except when sailing, there's not another one I've used five times a week for years on end.

It absolutely is; that was sort of my point. Wearing a nice shirt and tie has served me better than probably any other application of knot-tying in my life.

And I've done belayed rock-climbing, SPIE-rigged helicopter extracts, rappelling, and a fair bit of sailing. I'd still put "looking good at interviews, work, and dates" above all that ^_^

What if your favorite know is not a knot that you tie but a symbolistic Celtic Knot?

The artist or celtic lion knot is my all time fav knot.
