Believe dat.

It's been 20 years since we crash-landed on a planet full of ugly aliens, snazzy guns, and conveniently places power-ups. Today we're going back for a nostalgic trip FREE of charge!

Together with Epic Games, we are celebrating this anniversary with a 48h giveaway of Unreal Gold, the hallmark FPS that expanded the shooter genre with open areas, sweet weapon upgrades and, well, unreal lighting effects.

Grab it for FREE through our front page banner until May 24, 5pm UTC. If you already own the game, you will receive a code for a friend (needs to be redeemed before June 7th, 10pm UTC).

Then make sure to grab the rest of the Unreal series at 80% off until May 29, 5pm UTC.
For me, this sale and freebie are quite useless, as I already have all the Unreal series games GOG offers.
We really need UT3 on GOG.

smrtgi19: they cant ut3 is tied to steamworks aka valve steam
Originally Steam infected games have been cleaned of their Steam infection, and bought to GOG. An example of this, which I have in my GOG library, is Fallout New Vegas.
Why can't that be done for UT3?

A couple of years ago I spoke to Flak (community manager at Epic) and she told me the reason is not on GoG is because of the serials, for some reason the game wouldn't run without it and they would have to invest some time in making it work. At the time they were working on UT4 with the community, but that was before Paragon, and now with Fornite, UT4 doesn't seem to make any progress, let alone UT3. And that has nothing to do with steam.

I think if some one gets permission to work on this maybe one day we'll see it here.
Works on Windows 10 Pro even.

Thanks GOG!

Thanks
Yo, I'm having trouble installing Unreal Gold. Like, after it finished installing, it spent four hours configuring before just...stopping. I can't for the life of me press the play button, and it still thinks it's installing despite supposedly completing installation. I don't know what I did wrong.

Pajama: Is it just the top file (Missing High End files) that needs to be downloaded or do I need all the .utx files too? Page doesn't make it quite clear. Thanks.

EDIT: Mean to say 'Thank you' to GOG too but got carried away with textures... :)
avatar
Enebias: You need everything. They are quite heavy.
If you download just a pack, you'll have only some high definition textures and the others will be standard. A punch in the eye! XD
Thanks, downloading now... :)

Enebias: I'll post it here, too: http://www.unrealtexture.com/Unreal/Website/Downloads/Textures/ExtremeEnd/StockUnreal/UnrealExtremeEnd.htm
Improved textures for Unreal Gold, a fantastic sight to enjoy the orignal, untouched gameplay with much prettier graphics.
Cool, but.. the first pack file doesn't contain everything.
Do I need to download all the other .utx files too? (it's not very convenient).

Also, are they better than this?

That's what I asked and the answer is yes, you need everything.

Still remember the demo on a CRT screen at an expo (95, 96 was it?). I went so loud with my "WOW!!!" that my friends got all crazed... "Hey buddy, I don't think those on the other side of the street heard you clear enough!". I think I still have those videos and the demo music laying around. When I finally manned up and decided to just play to finish it, I actually got depressed when I saw the end screen, and it was all over...

The music, the gameplay, and the atmosphere is something you don't see much of even today, in terms of quality and really fulfill each other. And all those small other things that adds up to an impeccable game few can rival. I don't bother hyping up a game just for the sake of being nostalgic, so in this case the "hype" IS real.

Anyway, what I am really saying is thank you Epic!

Now, if only we could have them ALL open sourced I would be even more happier (that might also have fixed the serial problem with UT3), hint hint... :-p

Those are different thing. The first ones applies to map textures and those you link to are skins only if I read it correctly.

Fan patches:

Another way to render better graphics are the Unreal engine Direct3D 10 renderer (only for patch 226):
http://kentie.net/article/d3d10drv/

Some features:
Automatically adjusts field of view to aspect ratio (example).
Override textures: textures can be replaced by external .dds files not burdened by the engine's limitations. Artist info.
Bump mapping: can be used when a normal map texture is provided.
Parallax occusion mapping: either the standard detail textures or an external height map can be used for parallax occlusion mapping.
HDR lighting and bloom; but also Classic Lighting which looks exactly as the games always have.

HunchBluntley: [...]
I'm pretty sure if you DIDN"T already have a GOG copy, though, it will just get added to your account automatically instead. At least, that's how they generally do it. (I already own it here, so I have to assume.)
Yes it does. It automatically gets added to the account if one doesn't have it.
I just watched LGR's retrospective on it (uploaded yesterday) and he drops an affiliate link for GOG to buy it and support him. Kinda pointless now.
