sambo12345: The video is very inaccurate if you have actually lived in Saudi Arabia.
1. There is no law saying that women are not allowed to drive. There is only religious pressure not to do so.
However, women still drive cars.
2. Cinemas are banned but there is no need for them. Due to oil wealth, almost all Saudi people are rich and can afford huge 20 inch TV screens to watch movies and shows. They have mini cinemas in their own home.
3. Valentine's day is banned because they are not idiotic enough to fall for some consumerist day invented by western world where men have to spend thousands of dollars to make women happy.
4. Most Saudi people live a spoilt luxurious lifestyle due to oil wealth. They have no drive or ambition to compete for sports especially the women. So no one challenged the ban on women's sports.
That is such a stupid thing to say.

Women can't get a driver's licence in Saudi Arabia, whether they can unofficially drive a car or not. They still don't have the right to get the licence and won't be given one.
Also not everyone is rich, it's actually one of the countries with the largest wealth gaps in the world, so you have plenty of poor people - just because there are rich people it doesn't justify that cinemas are banned.
Not to mention that women can't do sports for the same reasons like they aren't really allowed much at all, like go out without a chaperone - a male relative or other similar rubbish going on in that country. You honestly think the ban on women's sports hasn't been challenged by women at all? Of course it has. Just because you think you know what's going on when in fact you are clueless doesn't mean you're right. Did you know they actually have a female football team that could've participated in international contests but was not allowed?
Saudi Arabia has one of the grossest human rights violations on earth, together with some African countries and those those currently occupied territories in Middle East.

And we should be thankful for that. The last thing we want is a strong and empowered global think tank/police force running around telling nations how to behave.
But hey, Obama won a Nobel peace prize and preached peace at the UN security council while he was dropping bombs on Syria and sending more troops into Afghanistan, so hypocrisy at the blue helmet foundation isn't anything new.

sambo12345: 2. Cinemas are banned but there is no need for them. Due to oil wealth, almost all Saudi people are rich and can afford huge 20 inch TV screens to watch movies and shows. They have mini cinemas in their own home.

4. Most Saudi people live a spoilt luxurious lifestyle due to oil wealth. They have no drive or ambition to compete for sports especially the women. So no one challenged the ban on women's sports.
2. There's a difference between something not being popular and being banned. Shoe shiners are not popular anymore, but if i want to go out on the street, with a box, ready to earn some money by cleaning shoes, i can do that.
3. Same as before. Being banned it's not the same thing of an holiday not being popular.
4. So... 30 million people are rich from digging oil. Damn, i wonder why don't many of us just try to go to live in Saudi Arabia. If they are doing so well, they can take few million people doing well too. Not the case. Not everyone it's rich, it would be childish to believe that. And, same as before, being constrained by cultural or religious motives do not make all right to ban an innocent activity.
I don't have anything against cultural identity. I love Japan's culture, even if i couldn't probably embrace it and i like that they have their own identity. But, that's the difference. Japan it's an developed country. And they don't legally force anyone in adopting their culture based on an old religious book. In Saudi Arabia, they do exactly that.
Imagine your country adopting as constitution the Bible. It does not make any sense, hence the stupid, inhumane laws.
In today's context, people that live in these kind of regimes, should be able to make their pick and move in more suitable countries. I'm sure that majority of the population does not have anything against those laws. But those that have problems with them, they can't escape and they are forced into following them. Democratic countries picked their laws based on direct problems, not on ancient text books.
When you apply capital punishment for "crimes" like homosexuality, witchcraft, sorcery, apostasy or adultery, you can't be an modern country, no matter how many rich princes you got.

Saudi Arabia! Where a women wearing trousers is a lashable offence!
Saudi Arabia! Where practicing sorcery is a capital offence!
Saudi Arabia! Where Migrant workers work 60+ hour weeks for less than 5 dollars a day!
The United Nations!
Where they appoint a Saudi Arabian to chair the Human Rights Council.
Hes about as deserving of the peace prize as Yassir Arafat was.

The UNHRC has been a sad disgrace for a while now. It's been used by retarded nations such as Saudi Arabia to push anti-Israeli agenda, push for a ban on blaspheming against their shitbook (Shtiran) and generally making a mockery of human rights in general.
Needless to say, most well-meaning western liberals think the UNHRC is a beacon of liberty and human rights. Good grief. Fuck the UNHRC.

So public lashings are terribly wrong but Canadian gay pride parades where diseased deviants flaunt themselves and suck each other off in front of neighborhoods with children watching is somehow less barbaric and acceptable? Saudi Arabia! Where practicing sorcery is a capital offence!

And Canadian women are such sluts that they invented slut walks where they can walk around topless and celebrate their promiscuous lifestyle which is totally fine right ?
Reality check dude.
every society has its ups and downs, that does not mean we judge others if our own society is messed up.

ScotchMonkey: The United Nations!
Where they appoint a Saudi Arabian to chair the Human Rights Council.
But they don't. The....whatever that was quoted (it wasn't linked?) in the first post in this thread was very ambiguous about it, but Saudi Arabia certainly doesn't chair the UNHRC. Where they appoint a Saudi Arabian to chair the Human Rights Council.
It was elected to be one of the member countries of the UNHRC (from 2013 to 2016) and this September, it was apparently elected to chair A panel (dunno what chairing "THE panel" would mean). The panel they were elected to chair apparently deals with "appointing independent experts", whatever that means.
The current President of the UNHRC is from Germany, and will remain so till the end of this month, when a new President will be selected.
I suppose it is odd and perhaps ironic to have them in the UNHRC at all, but the list of member countries in the past couple years have loads that haven't got a very clean human rights record. I don't think not having one is a criteria for being elected.
The link I think was being quoted in the first post in this thread

Possibly it's because many of the other UN members are hoping that the chairmanship will coax Saudi Arabia into improving their human rights record. But hey, they seem to be following the lead of the U.S. with the TPP trade agreement, which is allowing such saints as Malaysia (human trafficking), Vietnam (imprisonment of political dissenters, suppression of unions, and use of child labor), and Brunei (criminalization of homosexuality and stoning of single mothers) to become full-fledged trade partners.

In September 2015, Faisal bin Hassan Trad, Saudi Arabia's ambassador to the UN in Geneva, has been elected Chair of the United Nations Human Rights Council panel.

I think my opinion is too insignificant for this kind of things.
Is not like some other things that would bend over if enough social media pressure is applied to it.
