Deadly Premonition - A really unique and interesting game that most people hate because of its clunky controls and poor graphics.

kai2: I've asked a similar question in the past, but with the sheer number of games, I think it's a great question to revisit for new eyes and ideas.

What do you feel are underrated or overlooked games?

They don't have to be great or amazing... just games that you enjoyed
One that I never finished(due to various problems irl/etc) was Harbinger, a somewhat decent if cliched plot filled scfi RPG.

Going around the ship and discovering more about the lore and trying out the other characters(each has slightly different missions and different dialogs) was fun when I played it.

It's a bit open for a completionist like me, but I LOVE THIS GAME. The musical score, the characters, etc....all good/great.

"Somewhat decent" hardly sounds like a game that was "underrated".
I am currently playing Deus Ex: Invisible War (with the visible mod that improves the graphics a bit and probably fixes some bugs)... and I have to admit I enjoy it quite a lot.

In a way I do feel lots of the criticism towards it may be justified, like yes the levels seem oddly small and cramped compared to the first Deus Ex game (probably due to XBox console version limitations which affect the PC version too) and the system overall was simplified and they indeed abolished the skills system from the first game...

...but still I find it quite enjoyable just hunting for quests/missions and finishing them, searching places etc. Lots of the criticism was against the new "unified ammo" system where all weapons use the same ammo (only different amounts of it)... but in a way I even prefer it because then I don't have to gather all sorts of different ammo, and I can more freely use the weapons I want. Some weapons are still better for some situations and enemies while others are for some others.

And the missing skills system... in a way I found it an annoyance in the first game. For instance, sniping (with the sniper rifle) was pretty much impossible during the first half of the first game because your aiming would just drift so much. You had to enhance your skill that affects the aiming and/or enhance the sniper rifle itself to lessen the drift so that you can actually hit anything with the sniper rifle. I am actually glad the sequel doesn't have that anymore.

Even without the skills system, the sequel still feels kinda like an (action-)RPG, similarly like the first one. First of all, you can make choices related to the gameplay, like different factions giving you different clashing objectives and you have to decide which one to follow (in case they can't be all fulfilled at the same time), like whether you help or assassinate some poor scientist etc.

Secondly, you do improve your "skills" by the use of the biomods, and weapon mods. Through them, I do feel the character becomes better throughout the game.

Also, I kinda found the first Deus Ex system a bit confusing because sometimes skills, biomods and weapon mods seemed to affect the same thing, so it wasn't always clear whether you should concentrate on one of them or all of them. Like that sniper rifle aim drift, I recall there was both a skill and a weapon mod that affected it. So if I wanted to get completely rid of the drifting aim, was it enough that I maximize one of those things affecting it, or all of them?

The first Deus Ex wasn't that hard overall, and the sequel is even easier. I don't mind it though, it just means I advance in the game quicker. You don't die in the game unless you make something really stupid like walk into a visible trap or enter an open firefight with a big mech (instead of disabling it with EMP) etc.

As for the story... so far the Deus Ex: IW story has been a bit ho hum, but towards the end it seems to be getting a bit more interesting. I am now at the end of Cairo, just about to move to the next area.

That said, I guess I do still rate the first Deus Ex game a better game, it was a more ambitious and has more to do and search and stuff... but on its own, the sequel is quite ok as an game. Not at all a total disaster that I kinda expected it to be (lowered expectations).

Stacking : it has a unique art style, a unique gameplay mechanic, charming characters, a decent storyline, and an admirable world

Dex : A charming cyberpunk themed RPG with a brilliant protagonist, nice platforming and mechanics, has a strong sense of atmosphere, and a good production value

Pinstripe : Nice story, likeable characters, a sense of mystery, great art style, good voice acting

and, yes, Deadly Premonition too.

It's better than what it's sales numbers/visibility indicates, so imo it fits the bill.

It could also be seen more as an overlooked game, which is also in the title of the thread. ;)

You... didn't even finish it. Further, under the context I'd assume 'overlooked' in this thread was intended as being 'unfairly' overlooked.

One could argue ET for Atari is an overlooked game.

To give another example...

SiN & it's episodic sequel SiN Emergence. Both games I'd consider good/really good games that were ironically both overshadowed by a Half-Life release. Very similar to Duke Nukem 3D with a highly interactive world that featured imaginative weapons and a wise-cracking protagonist.

Also loved the music in the Emergence.

I didn't finish it due to PC failures/ a one time bug that made me have to restart an entire campaign, and other irl factors. I keep trying to get it done, though.

I agree on all those examples

Same here! Loved it, though the driving around with the rotating minimap was horrible.
GUN is neat action-adventure with nice gameplay which I consider to be an overlooked game.

I wish Thomas Jane did more voice acting. Dude has a perfect protagonist voice and was, imho, the best Punisher on the screen (sorry Jon).

ResidentLeever: Wario Land II (GBC/GB) - Puzzle platformer in which you can't die, only change status
You still lose money when you get hit, however. Also, from seeing speedruns, it seems that having to get afflicted with status ailments to proceed is a rather underused mechanic.

Wario Land 3 (GBC) improves on this; you don't lose money when you're hit (though you might be knocked back or out of a boss fight), and it is common to need to get inflicted with a status ailment to continue. It's nice to have a game where the goal *isn't* to avoid getting hit at all costs, but where getting hit is sometimes the required approach.

ResidentLeever: Dragon Quest III: Soshite Densetsu e... (SNES Remake) - JRPG, fan translated
I ran into a nasty game-breaking bug when I played the fan translation, after creating a lot of characters.

If you want to play the game in English, I recommend playing the GBC version and resetting if a character you care about suffers a stat loss while playing Pachisi. (There is a bug where the loss of a stat can corrupt a character's stats, resulting in a strength decrease causing a character to suddenly jump to extremely high levels, for example.)

On the other hand, if you want to play the game in Japanese, *then* I would recommend the SFC version, as the Japanese GBC version is apparently quite buggy. (The US version fixed those bugs, but a fix for a minor bug resulted in the major glitch I mentioned above.)

Yes! Definitely overlooked game.
