I just bought this game and cannot even start a character because every time i open up the name portion of the character creation screen, it keeps randonmly typing the name in. Nothing i do fixes it, and I am using an alienware laptop with the built in keyboard. Never seen this problem before and it is extremely frustrating to spend an hour for a perfect roll character just have to end up quitting the game because I cannot even type a characters name in the box. If anyone can help me solve this problem, ill be extremely grateful. This is truly infuriating.

Have you tried rebooting your computer?

I haven't heard of this problem before. Are you sure you don't have sticky keys or something enabled, or have some "trainer" software installed which might affect it - by trainer I mean a program which "trains" a character in game to get skills quickly. It does sound like something on your machine specifically.
You could create your character on a desktop where it doesn't happen, the. Export and import that into your laptop game as a workaround.

I agree: If I had to guess I would bet there's something filling the keyboard buffer, like it's upside down and being sat on, or something. Does the problem occur with, say, a word processor? It would fill the screen with text. You wouldn't be able to use the laptop at all, since all keyboard entry would be compromised. Is it Windows 10? If so, perhaps the touchscreen is picking up interference? A book resting on the virtual keypad?

This is a common problem with BG1, and the vast majority of times it is fixed with a simple cold reboot.
olnorton is correct, a simple cold reboot fixes the problem. Incidentally, Icewind Dale has the same issue.

I don't think I've encountered it. Nice to know how to fix it. Does it happen often? (I guess it would only be visible if one were creating a character, since the keyboard is only used for shortcuts, otherwise, in the main interface.)

But, yeah, whatever the problem, if it's software then rebooting should always work. I wonder what the root cause is.
