Update again: Part of Ukraine has declared independence, disarmed the police, ousted the central government, and according to some reports pulled out artillery pieces and other large items to block its new borders.

Definitely civil war at this point. There's no part of this that doesn't make me sad. I hope everyone comes through this as best they can and the fighting dies down quickly.

Doubt it but extremist groups tend to take advantage of disorder to further fan the flames and spread their propaganda.
