Patias: IMPORTANT: I really hope you don't turn this thread into yet another pointless discussion about "Nicalis Stole Pixel's Cave Story" because that's one of the biggest rumors ever involving a game. Pixel himself expressed satisfaction with Nicalis in a recent interview he gave (https://twitter.com/SuperSomething0/status/1469352925755547652), so please let's just talk about the game.

NOTE: I'm not defending Nicalis, there are a lot of horrible stories surrounding the company, but specifically about the Cave Story rumor, it's clearly a lie.
I'll make up my own mind on that. Pretending you're not defending Nicalis doesn't help their case. Why couldn't you directly link us the interview? Does it exist on the open internet? Who was the interviewer? Nicalis?

I came to this thread because I'd like to give Pixel some money for one of the indy legends. Paying a thief does not do that. If the publisher is innocent that should be cleared up too. Sometimes things are muddy, I'd be interested to hear the whole story so I can judge for myself.
The minimum requirements for Isaac are way off. Rebirth's page says it requires a discrete GPU and Repentance "requires" both an i7 and a GeForce 900 series GPU. But the specs on that page might just be a joke anyway.

Either way I've sunk dozens of hours into Repentance on my laptop with an i5-5200U + integrated Intel HD 5500, all without issue, so don't let those specs scare you off.

Highly recommend the game for anyone interested in roguelites.

dtgreene: Does Binding of Isaac: Rebirth have any way to save mid-run?

I remember playing the original Binding of Isaac, and one issue I had is that a run could easily take over a half hour and, due to the lack of any way to save, had to be completed in a single sitting. Have they addressed that?
Yes you can save and quit anytime. It saves between rooms

dtgreene: Wait, you have a problem with a mother being instructed by a deity to kill her own sun, and then attempting to follow through with it?

(Also, you do know that the plot is based on a Bible story, right?)

BanditKeith2: Loosely very loosely based that is
Not so loosely. And there are biblical references all over the game...

UCrest: The original website of Daisuke Amaya (Pixel) where Cave Story was hosted does not exist today.
There is a website of Studio Pixel that exists today and has the free Japanese version of Cave story. There is a cavestory.org page with the translations available as well if anyone wants to try the old version. I haven't tried them.

I also just noticed that there are also downloads on cavestory.org for Pink Hour and Pink Heaven, free shorter games in the world of Kero Blaster (made after Kero Blaster I think). It looks like cavestory.org has the older games from the same developer as well, some with translations. Also some artwork and devlogs. There is an overview page.

It is rather loose and biblical references even all over a game is not new there are others on here I would say that is way more full of em despite not wearing the biblical themes that clearly if at all on the descriptions.. So for me its actually better in this case as it atleast is very open about such in the description.. compared to others
low rated
Would have loved this 8 years ago, wondering if there's going to be a GOG Connect for this but morons will just insult me so I'm just going to say: PASS!
It took eternity and three days, but it's finally here. Istabuy!

bhrigu: I was excited to see these titles on GOG.
However, the omission of Linux/Mac installers is disappointing.
You can still get DRM-free Linux version on Humble Store.

It would appear GOG under-performs quite a bit lately :(
Cool thing that Cave Story finally arrived on GOG.

Not so happy about Binding of Isaac though, for many reasons (not that great gameplay, shallow and trivial mash-up of dirt, feaces, semi-christian(?) and satanic(?) motives). Truth be told, I would be much happier with release of Gish (made by the same guy, but much earlier), IMO it's underestimated platform game, deserving for more attention than BoI.

When it comes to Nicalis, there is bit of a history of not living up to reasonable expectations. One such case had to do with the La-Mulana Remake: Nigoro made a deal with Nicalis to get the game officially localized on Wii. Not long before release, Nicalis tweeted that the localization was canceled, since the Wii was a dying platform. Problem is, they didn't talk to Nigoro first.

While we ultimately got La-Mulana Remake in the west, it was without the "help" of Nicalis.

Last time I checked, the Windows version was getting updates, but the Linux version was not.

In particular, there's a machine gun challenge that, at least at the time, was available in the Windows version but not the Linux version.

I've checked this and it seems that both versions on the library are roughly from the same age (see attachments), so they are either equally updated or (most probably) equally outdated.

I agree, Humble Store is not the best of places. But the difference between it and GOG is that it has Linux DRM-free version (in addition to Steam™ key) while GOG has not. Sad but true.

Does this newer version of Isaac rely on luck less than the original did?

The Linux version has no date listed, which I believe means that the version there has not been updated since its original release, whereas the Windows version has a date that it's been updated.

There's quite a bit of luck involved but you can mitigate it by being skillfull. :D
