It looks like the LBA games (Twinsen's Little Big Adventure 1 & 2) have been upgraded to their latest anniversary versions a few hours ago.

All is well in the world when older games get attention from their devs and are not abandoned. However, while on Steam you still have the option of getting access to the older DOS(Box) versions by means of free DLCs, these are strangely absent on GOG.

Before anyone says "well, with Galaxy you can access older versions of the installers", I'd like to remind people not everyone here is a user of optional clients.

It would be nice if we could have these added back as goodies, please...

It would enable people who want to play the games in DOSBox or with ScummVM on Linux to keep doing that.

Let's hope [2.21] can be convinced to let GoG add the Legacy versions as extras.
The similar Darwinia situation got resolved too, in the end.

Here's hoping that it was just an oversight and that the dosbox offline installers will turn up in the near future. I really don't mind updated versions as long as the original version is still available as well. Please, GOG, add back the dosbox offline installers!

Sorry but the DLC versions on Steam are not the original DOS versions neither but the vanilla game running under Windows, without the New Game + nor other subtle qol features added in the new update

Are you sure? I'm not a steam user, but their description says, I quote:

"Experience the original, untouched version of Twinsen’s Little Big Adventure Classic, originally released in 1994 as Little Big Adventure or Relentless: Twinsen’s Adventure. "

The originals were DOS-based...

My feelings exactly.

From their own words:

Retro Edition: Except for the in-game language selection, you’ll be able to play the original game as it was developed, but playable on Windows (no DOSBOX).

Classic +: This was our main focus the past months :
> Complete C port for both games => required to consider other platforms that don't support Assembly code
> Controller support
> UI changes (new options in the menu)
> Platform SDK implementation : achievements, cloud savings

-------------------

Confusing Indeed. On Steam there are in fact two DLC for the first game, one is the "Classic Original" version and other is the DotEmu 2015 version port from IOS. The previously "Enhanced Edition". The latter one never was available in GOG. And based in their roadmap words, the former runs under Windows.

Confusing... and rather unfortunate. I'm glad I've kept the previous installers backed up locally, but I still think this is very wrong.

There's nothing wrong with improving your game and making it "modern", but for the love of all that is retro, leave the original versions available to people who may want to play it as it was back in the day, maybe on a retro PC. Is it really that hard to do?

Meanwhile, we have people like the Retro City Rampage dev who port their Windows games back to DOS...

For the time being and until this is properly resolved you can access the original 1.0 offline installers by changing the language selection in the library entries for LBA and LBA 2 to anything other than English, by the way.

Ha, nice find :). I have them backed up, but in case anyone wants to save a copy for later use, now may be your last chance... depending on how it all plays out. Since the DOSBox versions are not on Steam, I don't have a good feeling about this, unfortunately...

So, I understand that the language files from both installers are mutually compatible, right? You can tinker with the files and end up playing in English with any of the installers.

Yes, there really only was one identical universal installer across all languages. You're getting the "english" version even if you select german.

If it helps, ScummVM added yesterday support for the new updated version so that now it can be detected and run properly if you point ScummVM to the folder where GOG installs the game. You can test this with a daily development (master branch) build of ScummVM 2.6.0git.

If anyone tests a playthrough ScummVM and encounters any bugs please report them on the ScummVM bug tracker.

Thank you, that is indeed good news!

I've commented on their blog post asking for them to restore the DOS versions to GOG. They may completely ignore it, but you never know.
So... we have the "Original versions" DLC here too now, but as Gudadantza said, it seems to be a new Windows port just without some of the changes of the enhanced edition. So that means the DOS version which I actually bought is nowhere to be found.

Also, what's with the carpet bombing of this thread?
