In BLUF: I'm asking people to pick the better mascot for Linux on GOG.

What: I'll be blunt, Tux is very much a dated design, and one that just seems like a sore thumb. More shaped like a bowling pin or a old warning cone, the old Antarctic bird is steeped in the blobby 2000s design that gave us some of the less elegant logos of the day.

Who then: Xenia. She's a fox, she's got synergy with other projects, and she's got immediate appeal. Her design traces back to the same era of Tux, but is much more versatile than a loving fat penguin. Plus foxes are more global than a flightless bird known for living exclusively on one landmass.

Why: I'm appealing (perhaps vainly) to GOG staff to replace the penguin with the Xenia. Sure, the staff would have to replace checks notes one asset that was a knockoff of Tux to begin with, but hey! It'd give a bored graphic designer something to do anyway, if GOG even has one aboard currently. There's already a logotype and icons on the site for her to begin with.

No, because Tux = Linux. Nobody would have any idea what a fox means. Or else they'd probably think it means it works with Firefox. Also, penguins live in a bunch of places, such as Australia, South America, and elsewhere.

Surely you can come up with something better than that? There's archived history, it isn't that hard to explain. Foxes are also known for cunning, cuteness, agility, and adaptability. The logotype and iconography for Xenia would be wholly unique and readily identifiable.
Trans Rights is Human rights.

That being said we don't need whoever Fursona it was to be the face of Linux.

I had no idea who you were talking about when I read the name. Sounds a little like Xena the Warrior Princess?

Tux is established, and many people recognise it even if they don't use Linux.

Your post should have read

"I like foxes, please can my favourite animal be an icon too, pleaseeeee"

Or maybe you could find the link I put in there and read the history. It could be like the MSI Dragon, you know. Community stirs a push?

Maybe I should BLUF it.

I can't imagine a fox furry fighting for trans rights being a particularly unifying symbol.
I feel like Picard listening to the Tamarians for the first time.
Immediately thought of Firefox.

Then I remember how its being supported by Google, so they can avoid an Antitrust.

Which makes me both sad and annoyed. There is only Google chrome and Firefox and each their derivatives.

But thats a different can of worms.

In a related vein. I would much rather a unifying linux that focused on gaming as a default, rather than a silly icon, old or new.

Being able to customize my car is great. Not being a mechanic....suddenly not as enjoyable.
Same logic.

Not really a fan of furries as logos. Not to mention nobody would have any idea what is being referenced.
Don't we have our world carrying bear already?

Honestly I would say they managed the exploit to make it look a lot worse than Tux. If you want to make something more "modern", the modern trend is to simplification, no to switch it for something that looks likes a reject from Deviant Art Furryporn section.

Also as others mentioned the majority of peoples identify Linux with "penguin", even peoples who don't use and don't really know about Linux or Tux, changing it for a barely known alternative mascot wouldn't be very smart.

Not GOG's Mascot; the icon for Linux games.

It's not. The Tux logo is recognizable, Xenia is not. It's really not hard to understand. If you want to change that, go talk to whoever's in charge of Linux logos (good luck with that), not GOG. If you can get Xenia to replace Tux and be widely adopted, then GOG would presumably follow suit. Eventually. Maybe. (They still have text on some pages referring to "OS X", which hasn't existed for many years now.)
