Try the old Gold Box games (the ones in Forgotten Realms Collection 2, minus Hillsfar).

If you like those, try the Krynn series as well. (Same engine.)

Edit: Corrected the game number. (Thanks mrkgnao for pointing out the mistake.)

Cyraxpt: Oh, there's a mod with widescreen options? And there's no problem with the game? Because i have bad luck with old games, recently i installed Full Spectrum Warrior to find there was a problem with the sound...

Just to be clear, it's this one, right?
Yeah, if you install the 1.13 mod, which is sort of the universally agreed upon way to play the game these days, then it comes with an editor where among other things you can set the resolution.

As far as I know, it is possible to install the 1.13 mod with steam's version of JA2, but I think it is easier with gog's version. At least that's how I did it. The game runs perfectly fine on my 64bit win7 laptop as well.

Pretty damn awesome game too. Has a real 80s action b-movie vibe. The only thing that's missing is the president's daughter having been kidnapped :)

Green_Hilltop: Pokemon Dungeon series

dtgreene: This game is a roguelike, not a strategy game.

mrkgnao: Oh, and in addition to everything mentioned so far, there's also Fallout Tactics (the best game in the series, IMO), which in case you're wondering is nothing like Fallout 1 or 2.
avatar
dtgreene: Fallout Tactics isn't fantasy; to my understanding, the game has guns (and other modern weapons), but not magic.
But it's still a strategy. A roguelike one, but nonetheless.

The way I see it, strategy games involve controlling multiple units; Pokemon Mystery Dungeon does not. PMD has fare more in common with Rogue than with Heroes of Might and Magic.

You're right. I forgot Cyraxpt had asked for fantasy.

Collection Two.
(Collection One is Eye of the Beholder).

Cyraxpt: FML, i've already had a huge post but i overwrite what i had copy before refreshing the page to see if there was a new post, let's start again...
Install Lazarus. and [url=https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/lazarus-form-recovery/loljledaigphbcpfhfmgopdkppkifgno?hl=en]Google Spy versions available.

Looking at the screenshot, I kinda understand what you want, but I can't think of anything I've played with that sort of mini-battlefield. There are some well-known mobile games like that, Auro would fit the bill if you can stomach the art style.
avatar
mrkgnao: The game has no permadeath. You just reload and retry the battle.
I don't think you can grind. There is more or less a fixed set of battles.
At some points you have multiple battles to choose from, so if one proves too hard you can try the others, gain a level or two, and then return to the harder one.
Oh, so it's a bit similar to Kings Bounty? This in the sense that some enemies i had to come back later to fight them since they were in a higher level than me/had few soldiers.

I don't mind other settings so your recommendation was noted for a future playthrough but yeah, for now i'm looking for a fantasy setting.

Ehhhh, bit too archaic for my taste.

Nah, i'll buy on Steam next week (during the sales) if it has the same price than currently on gog, not going to give gog any money until they fix the forum.

Thanks for the recommendation for Lazarus, i'll check it later. As for the game, yeah, i prefer a small battlefield type of game but i want something more meaty and not another android game (or port) like Warhammer Quest.

Damn I'm an idiot :P I had a whole reply typed out and then I casually dragged an mp4 onto the 'Add your post' screen instead of onto media player classic...

Anyways, I think I said:

Ah ok, no worries, just be keep in mind that you might have to search the forums a bit for info about how to install 1.13 for steam's version of JA2. The 1.13 mod is incredibly well known under JA2 fans so it should be easy to get this info. An additional resource to the steam forums is

Not as extreme as KB, where you may have to delay the battle for weeks until you're the right level. Here, if a battle is too hard you might benefit by delaying it by 4-5 battles if you can, but practically once a battle is accessible it's usually doable, unlike KB.

I'll give it a try, honestly i'm not a fan of games where i can't bypass the difficulty by grinding but if easier than KB then i think i can do it, at least the problem with KB was that i ended up running out of units to purchase (or gold to buy them).

Yes. That's a common KB deadlock.

The trick is not to lose units at all. It's possible to finish almost all battles with zero losses, then your money goes only on buying better units, not on restocking your ranks.
avatar
Cyraxpt: Perhaps what i'm asking doesn't make sense but i'm looking for something like Heroes of Might and Magic or King's Bounty but without the troops, same type of overworld map, battle system (grid) and fantasy setting.
Sounds a lot like Warlords 3 from SSI to me. Unfortunately not available here (yet?). Have a look at some lets plays on youtube. It does enable you to hire units for combat, but all combat is completed automatically if the tactical side of things is not to your liking.

Uhm, from what i've seen that's actually the opposite of what i asked, it has troops and i want the combat.
