MIkeKathos: None of these look like the game I'm thinking of
Since it wasn't mentioned yet I think, how about KKND2: Krossfire? I recall at least you could combine parts to make new kinds of vehicles/tanks in it, but I never really used that feature in the game, I just played with the default units.

Not sure if that feature was already in the first KKND game actually...

MIkeKathos: None of these look like the game I'm thinking of, but some of these look like something I need to play for my 6 weeks of holidays coming up lol. The art style for Tanktics looks pretty close to what I remember, but this was also ~20 years ago and games never look like what we remember them. Tanktics doesn't quite look right from the video's I've found on it.

If I'm remembering it right, you could go into the tank factory workshop thing from the main menu and create some tanks or you could do it while you were in a mission but it would take you out of the battle and put you in a full screen 'workshop' to make the tanks before going back to the battle. I wish I still had my old demo discs, there were some great games I'd love to play again.
Are you sure it wasn't Warzone 2100? Because that sounds exactly like what you describe. There's a "workshop" screen where you can pick a chassis, then pick the kind of wheels, then pick the weapon (and any other special features) and *boom* there's your unit, out there on the field.

Mind you, I also totally recommend checking out the other games like Hostile Waters.
You can also have a look here:

Also, this is what the unit creation screen looks like in warzone 2100:

and though I highly doubt it, just for the hell of it, here's what it looks like in alpha centauri:

MIkeKathos: I 've been trying to find a game where you could customize your vehicles with different treads, bodies, and weapons. I don't remember it being super in depth, more of just a slider for each slot. I think the name of the game was also the name of the factory that you created units from, but I could be wrong there. If anybody has any idea what I'm talking about or could find some screenshots that I could recognize it from that would be great. I had it on a demo disc from a PC Gamer magazine if that helps any.
Here you go...
I'm not sure but I think War, Inc. had some customize options.

To me sounds a bit like warzone2100. You could customise the vehicles but cant remember being able to name buildings.

Did it occur to you to read any posts besides the OP before replying?

Warzone seems the closest, I guess I need to forget what the graphics might have looked like because that's been unreliable in the past. Either way, Warzone looks really good.

It certainly wasn't Metal Fatigue but I do need to play that game again, such an awesome game. I'll have to look at some of these tonight. Thanks for some of the suggestions though guys, lots of good looking RTS games in here.

On the topic of RTS, any idea if they'll ever bring Warbreeds to GoG? I loved that one and wouldn't mind playing it again, can't seem to find it anywhere that will actually work for me.

A lot of fun, and you can't beat the price! A few notable details about that game:

- units gained experience, and you can recycle units and transfer that gained experience into the next units produced.
- the Command turret, which essentially creates a laser target designator unit for directing massed fire. As that unit gains experience, it can direct fire for a larger assigned group of friendly units.
- similar thing, but with the radar turret. Direct grouped artillery fire.

Also has internet play via IP address (er, at least the original version did so I assume the open source game also has that). And you can adjust the AI smarts for each bot faction, which I don't recall seeing before that game did it.

Anyway, a lot of fun, and a lot of cool maps to download.
Well Warzone definitely wasn't what I was thinking of and it seems pretty good but it makes me want to play Metal Fatigue, I love me some Metal Fatigue.
Metal Knight?

Extreme Tactics ?

It's a real-time strategy game developed by Media Station and published by Piranha Interactive in 1998.  The game lets you build your own units by combining chassis, transport type, weapons, shields, and other equipment.  A demo was shipped with the March 1998 edition of PC Gamer.

This looks and sounds almost exactly what I'm looking for, I definitely have to check this one out. Thanks so much.

Edit: Spent 3 hours last night settings up a windows 98 VM and played some Extreme Tactics, Dark Colony, and Warbreeds all night. Weekend well spent, thanks guys!
