Elmofongo: Time to ruffle your feathers. I watched the movie and well the best part is the very beginning (The opening planets and the Dawn of Man) and the very end (when the "main" charcater is.....alone)
The rest in the middel is rather....meh and not even the whole thing with Hal 9000 becoming self aware and theme of it does not interest me that much (I have seen that in Blade Runner)
snowkatt: actually i hate the beginning
its dull and boring and i usually skip it
i mostly watch 2001 because of the mind blowing special effects
this movie is from 1968 and the special effects are still mindblowing especially in HD
the monkey costumes look a bit crap though
And that is why I absolutely love the opening part how slow it was.
The Dawn of Man watching was a story told without words It reminded me alot of the Rite of Spring segment of Disney's Fantasia.
Ancient Ape Humans are just animals.
Than they come into contact with the Monolith and it stimulated something within the brains, Curiosity, the desire the know and learn what is?
Than on Ape discovered the Killing power of Bone and thus began the first use of a tool.
And we learn how to eat meat thus expanding our diet.
And than in the scene with the 2 tribes of apes fighitng for driking water pools and thus the first War was fought and the bone was the first Weapon of Mass Destruction.
And than a shot of an Ape Man throwing a Bone into the sky and it transitions into a satillite, from Bone, to Rock,......, to the Car, to the Satillite.
And all that was told visually and without words.
