So we're getting a...sequel? to The Matrix. We've got Keanu and Carrie-Anne Moss, but Laurence Fishburne has been replaced. To me it looks like kind of like a remake that will make nods to the previous films. I think it looks kind of interesting, but I can't say I'm hyped. Not sure if I'll get around to watching this one. What do you think?

I expect it to suck, though I can hardly imagine it being worse than the previous two sequels. And honestly, this trailer actually looks quite a bit better than I thought it would. Especially the first half, which builds a really eerie mood. If they were smart, they'd lean heavily into that and imaginative, weird ways they could play with reality and perception. Superhero films have been delivering multiple massive CG action spectacles year in and year out for a long time now, so if that's what they'll rely on, it'll just be dull and tired.

I absolutely LOVED the first movies.

The sequels were... okay? I guess? It was neat to get a "wrap" to the story and the third was more enjoyable than the second but obviously it was hard to recapture the amazingness-ness of the first. Plus I think the revolutionary "wire-fu" and gunplay of the movies has been surpassed by modern action fight scenes.

I think they sort of fit in their place and time, but now that kind of modern kung fu movie will seem a bit dated (along with the at the time amazing electronic soundtracks that accompanied the fights).

Plus Matrix without Morpheous (spelling?) just won't be the same. I LOVE Laurence Fishburn. I get it, I guess - everything old is new again and reboots have their place but it'll be hard to recapture that original Matrix magic.

At this point, I can expect Hollywood to disappoint me with another generic, cliched, predictable movie. I was really repulsed by the blue hair girl in the trailer and it seems she will play a big role in the movie.

Hopefully, the movie is mostly centered around keanu reeves. He is the face of the matrix trilogy.

About the trailer? I see nothing wrong with it. Maybe it misrepresents the movie, but I won't know until it's released and I've watched it.

I hope the movie will be a sequel, or at least different enough from the previous Matrix movies.

I have very low / non-existent expectations for this one, I often considered that the first Matrix was an happy accident rather than an accurate representation of the Warchovsky talents given its sequels, it's not helped by the fact that they didn't really made anything worthwhile since. If Jupiter and Atlas are any indication of how it will end up it will definitely be an hard pass for me.

I do think there's still a lot of room left for great films that deliver on multiple massive action spectacles. And the reason I left out CG there is George Miller. Not that there wasn't a ton of CG in Fury Road, but I distinctly remember already being bored with massive action spectacles by the time I went to see the film. But then Fury Road showed me that what I was actually bored with was massive action spectacles done poorly. It's something that's perhaps not that easy to do well. Most of the Avengers series, and pretty much all of the Transformers series fail horribly at it, for me at least.

I think it will have a hard time competing with Free Guy. :P

Played both. Really completing a story.

Oh, there is plenty of room for great and creative action films. I meant in this particular context - the kind of action Matrix did, especially in the sequels, where Neo is basically a superhero, was a lot like what we keep getting in many Marvel films and similar stuff. You could edit in parts of Captain America Civil War or Black Panther into the Matrix Reloaded, and the only way they would not blend together is if you forgot to tinge the Marvel films green.

Edit: Anyway, I'm much more looking forward to The King's Man, which I think is coming out the same day, and I'm afraid is going to get crushed between Spider-Man and the Matrix. A shame.

Basically I'm a fan of the original series. I even liked Revolutions very much in opposition to many other people. And I must admit that I like what I've seen in the trailer. In the first look it may seem like a remake, but if we get deep enough into the original series story, it may appear that we'll get a sequel. During the conversation with the Architect a fact is revealed to us that there were several Neos in the past. A new version of Matrix comes with a new Chosen One and that's probably him in the trailer. Of course I expect some connections to the original series and possibly some hidden background in the whole story. If these are true, we'll get a great movie.

I'm afraid I always struggle to grasp the strong dislike for those two sequels. The action scenes in those other films you mentioned don't work for me, I think because they simply lack impact. As if there's not really anything at stake, or I don't believe/care that there is*. In this sense the attack on Zion stood in stark contrast for me compared to those films. Each time I watch those scenes I'm almost egging the soldiers on to somehow overcome the invasion.

That Neo is pretty much a god likewise didn't bug me, at least initially, since I knew they only spent relatively short periods of time plugged in, and that in the real world he was as vulnerable as anyone else. That made the end of the 2nd film especially nerve wracking for me.

If I had to level strong criticism to those sequels, I'd point to the nonsensical way in which Smith possesses a human body, how Neo basically does become godlike, in both worlds, towards the end of the 3rd film (and I don't remember it being clear how), and how the final fight was a major let-down.

* then again in GI Joe The Rise of Cobra the action is also completely devoid of any tangible danger to the heroes, yet I love every second of it. At least the parts with Snake Eyes.

To me both Matrix sequels were just ungodly boring. I didn't care at all about any of the new characters, I barely cared about any of the old characters, the writing was terrible and the dull, pretentious dialogues just neverending, even the action wasn't impressing me, it all just became a CG cartoon at that point... to this day Reloaded is the last movie that I ever just gave up on and walked out of a movie theatre (I didn't even go to see Revolutions in cinema). And that's actually saying quite a lot - untill last year I would see something like 20 movies in theatre a year, some years it was more than double that.

But then, to be fair, I was never even that crazy about the first Matrix. It was fun, I enjoyed it, but I never thought of it as anything more than a fun, dumb action film, and really just an ok one, nothing great.
