AlexZeusMercer: im sorry to hear about your hdd failure. can i ask what brand was it ?
ive read the comments here.. people saying like you need to buy bigger hdd for backup ---> i think this is a wrong idea
because their are not quality build and have many platters inside not only 1

your best bet for future : western digital 1tb black edition (has only 1 tb platter not 2x500gb)
and for backup a hdd docking station and you can buy a second one i mentioned, because the external ones are poor quality, so your route will be internal hdd for use & internal hdd + docking station for backup.

hope it helps!
I agree on the external drives. However the 1tb isn't that helpful. I have 3gb, so currently use 4tb, wd green I believe. They only get used once a quarter as I cycle through 4 of them during the year.

It was a Seagate Barracuda 500gb.

From now on I'll only go with WD or Hitachi, the one I use for the OS, 5 years and no sign of malfunctioning, temps are ok, never crashed, bad blocks or what have you.
The Hitachi 500GB one I use for the photos, videos and music backups. I think it has almost 10 years and still rocks!
Great tips, I'll look into it. ;)

ZFR: But I am assuming that you can afford the 1 TB of data. Even if it's only 300GB games (bought on sales), their cost alone is a lot bigger times that of a back-up medium. I *can* believe that some people might not afford 50$ (if you don't want to go with cheapest HD) every 5 years (that's 10$/year), but those people don't need to anyway.

Either way it is really impossible to argue with the "can't afford it argument" so there is no point in me dragging this discussion further. You remind me of this fellow with his "gaming is only a hobby for the rich".
or my life gives me more important things to spend my money on. By the way, NO I can't afford a $50 hard drive. I barely afford my fucking rent. So yes I can argue with that argument. Jack ass.
Sorry to hear about your trouble neurasthenya! Losing an HD seriously sucks.

Speaking of (possibly self-caused) tragedies: A while back I formatted an external My Passport HD from Western Digital, one of the 1T models. Ever since then the computer 99% can't see the HD. When it does see it, it will stop doing so after a few minutes. The HD originally had a bunch of software (some kind of data manager or whatever it's called, that one could install to their computer if they wanted, but it wasn't nesessery to have it installed for the HD to work. It was a plug play device) just thrown inside, not in a seperate hidden compartment, which of course got erased with the format. I think that's why it no longer works.

Possibly a nesessery driver was there as well? Or maybe it was a faulty disk to begin with. No idea, I haven't tried formatting any of the others!

Look, you misunderstood what I wrote. I didn't mean one can't make the argument, I meant it's impossible to reply to such an argument. If one says "I can't afford it"; then there is nothing really I can respond with to that. it's your money and you know best. No need for name calling. Good evening.

Oh I am sure you wouldn't call someone a jack ass if that was thrown at you also. Either way if I misunderstood, I do apologise but some people need to remember not everyones life is peachy.

nightcraw1er.488: As for everyone else, take this warning, backup your digital life, then back it up again, then back it up again and keep that backup a long way away.

And if your still reading at this point, why are you not backing your system up!
^ This!

The disk on my first laptop died on me without warning some years ago. Lost everything on it, and back then I didn't backup much. Had all my photos on DVD's and had most of my music on CD's, so it wasn't a total loss, but it was a pain in the ass to rebuild everything. What I could, that is. -_-
Oh my, I'm just realizing the saves and some programs I haven't backed up.
;_;

Why life, why?

Adding to my unlucky strike, I'll have to buy another chair, albeit a shitty and improper for computer use it was serviceable till half and hour ago.

Someone around here have a million monies to spare?
