Does anyone remember reading in one of the updates about how inXile counteracted customs for Kickstarter backers? I'm sure inXile said something but haven't found anything so far :(

Nirth: For how long will the PayPal donation last?
avatar
Nergal01: IIRC, until the end of the month. Meaning that Paypal backers would have to raise another ~94k within a week.
I don't think we'll get there, but maybe they'll still implement it in some way...

Chances look pretty slim right now, yeah. PP has slowed down a lot over the last two weeks: / Well, they can still use the extra money to work on the game, so the more the better.

There is a possibility :)

In the comments section of the latest update, a gentleman named Tech asked:

"Is there a modified goal if we do fall short of the 4.5 million stretch goal of a stronghold. Just curious and if not then I will be fine with that"

Upon which both inXile and Adam Heine replied:

"we'll discuss that if it happens, but hopefully we can still make it."
"We're still discussing what will happen if we fall just short of the stretch goal."

I do recall it, and I think the counteract was by declaring the value of the physical goods to be lower than the KS tier. So even though I paid $113 for it, it would be shipped as a $20 item. Quick look doesn't turn up anything, can try looking more if you wish to.

Good to hear. Was to be expected though. And they still have those extra 200k (which are there for security and not counted towards the goal, but still). I guess the "Stronghold" will either not be as complex as they've imagined or they'll just invest more resources in the story and reactivity and whatnot.
Pledges updated

Hello Forgotten Ones,

We’ve been having a good run at the final stretch goal and saw some real spikes and increased activity far beyond what we’d normally expect from our PayPal pledges at this stage. Thanks to all of you for your effort in rallying to the cause! However, it’s looking really unlikely we’ll make the $4.5M stretch goal, with our current PayPal total being $239,438, which means our total money raised so far is $4,428,365, with only two days left to reach the stretch goal.

But! Our percentage of dropped pledges was way below our estimates, proving yet again that you guys rock! As you may recall, our Lead Tormenter Brian Fargo and superfan Steven Dengler matched pledges between $1M and $3M, adding a total of $200K. That money was set aside primarily against failed pledges, but because of your dedication, we can apply enough of it toward our budget – combined with the PayPal totals – so as to have reached $4.5 million.

Which means? We made it! Because you guys are so awesome (and because Fargo and Dengler are so awesome) we can implement every single one of our stretch goals, including not just the player “stronghold” but also our ideas for expanded reactivity, length and depth, pursuing some of our crazier ideas concerning choice and consequence. As we outlined in update 19, while the classic “stronghold” concept might not fit this game the potential is there to do some really interesting things to tie it into our theme of legacy and the unique weirdness of the Ninth World. Colin’s been hard at work hashing out the overall plot as well as resurrecting and moving forward with ideas we had for features such as the stronghold, and he’s come up with some pretty great ones.

Thanks to all of you, we can now make those ideas happen. Thank you!

Alrighty then. They sure got their work cut out right now, but here's hoping the game will be all the better for it. :D

I'm unfamiliar with customs, what does that actually do? Do you get taxed for customs items? Or is shipping just more? Either way I'm in the US, so it doesn't affect me.
In Spain (and AFAIK in all EU) if the value of the goods surpasses a limit (in Spain is 20€, I think) you have yo pay the VAT (21%) and a fine. So if you include an invoice marking the value of the goods as 20$ you don't have to declare it, but sometimes it misfires (in customs they have a list of generic goods with values, so if the deviation is too big they use the value in their list).
Updated our Journal (20): Some Stories

TL;DR: $4.5M Stretch Goal reached; design update; job opening for an experienced programmer; Numenera preorder ends May 31st; new concept by Andree Wallin.

The update is another wall of text, so too big to post here. The highlight is that they are looking for a programmer.
