I was in the same shoes as you, being not anti-Steam and prefer gog.com and I got Max Payne 1 from Steam a while back. In that case it was a good bet, that game isn't available here even now and won't be in the foreseeable future.

It's fine since there isn't the gog.com alternative. I did get some older Paradox titles from Steam also, such as Victoria II, and now they are available on gog.com and well, how was I to predict Paradox on gog.com?

But I won't be buying the same game twice just to have it on gog.com, but on the other hand, I will not be so fast getting games from Steam in the future unless they're exclusives or it's the only way for some other reason.

edit: the same applies for Origin, in fact I'd rather get a copy from Origin than Steam, because though I am not anti-Steam, I dislike it. Origin I dislike far less.

I'm not sure the term "fanboy" fits here; unless he only buys on gog and nowhere else no matter what. If the devs want broad support they should make sure their product is not tied to a singular platform; popular or not.

Just buy it, play it and hopefully feel happy.

I said that someone who finds the game DRM-free elsewhere but waits for a GOG release is a fanboy. This doesn't apply to the current case.

As for the devs, if they want broad support, getting their game on Steam is the way to go. It's the natural first port of call. For other stores such as GOG it depends on the work needed vs. the expected benefit.

Buy the Steam version as cheaply as possible (e.g. through a Humble Bundle) so that I don't necessarily mind later buying it again on GOG, if I choose so.

That's what I've do, it has worked relatively well so far.

Maybe try emailing the developer directly. Posting on a Steam board and asking for a non Steam version is a little silly. Obviously the potential customer already has interest in the title a Steam account so there is no real reason for the dev to offer their game somewhere else. On the other hand, if the developer gets emails from non Steam users then they see potential customers who are very interested in their title, enough to take the time to look up the dev and write an email, but is also a lost sale if the dev doesn't make a business decision to offer their game in other outlets. I am anti-Steam and have written to many developers. Some have just blown me off, a few have given me free Steam keys (in case I change my mind I guess) but there have been quite a lot that respond very positively. One developer flat out told me that they wanted to release a DRM free version but were stopped by their publisher. Others have said that DRM free versions were being worked on at the time and a very few have told me that they never really though about the impact of DRM until then. Many of those I wrote to brought their game DRM free to either GOG, Humble Bundle or both. In each of those cases I also took the time to write them a followup email to thank them. When applicable I would inform them that I would not buy the game right away, instead I'd wait for the release sale to end and buy the game at full price to show my appreciation.

For me, I'm not just choosing for myself but for 6 other people.

I'm not against DRM per say, though without custom hardware its just snake oil, but after the broken promise of SFS I am very much anti-steam.

WIth Steam only allowing 1 game per library to be used at any time the reality for us is buying a game via steam would end up in someone not being able to play a game that no one else is playing.

As a family our choices are re-buy a game that we've already paid for or find a way to bypass Steams unfair restrictions. We went for the later.

Laddy there is a thing called offline mode that will sort your issue. Before someone says something, yes it does work. I use it with my kids and I don't care if that is not what its for.

And there's also family sharing options. Doesn't make it any less cumbersome than a DRM free installer, though; that's what I use when I buy games for my family and friends.

I haven't tried that option admittedly. I see no point if I can just put one offline haha.
