timppu: The older (GOG) versions are still good too, with the added benefit of running better on lower end PCs.

Plus, since he was asking for games older than 2005... The HD remakes are newer, from around 2009-2010 I think..

Yeah, it's nice to have the two combined into one game.
They're also working on a new campaign.
I got Revolution for free due to owning the classic games on Steam.
Seems like the best way to play them right now.

True the ability to switch characters was novel, and Clive Barkers input on story helped, but after 2 attempts to get through the before giving up in disgust this can't be a top FPS to recommend.

Prey was ok.
Hmm it's subjective. I liked Clive Barker's Jericho. I liked the plot very much. It's one of the few FPSs I played through. Also shooters like Serious Sam had those enemy waves. Nearly every FPS has enemy waves.

Im always looking for something different in the generes. Thats the reason why I also liked Prey where you could also walk on walls and the ceiling.

FPSs like for example the 11th Call of Duty bore me. Only new maps and skins. Nothing special.

KISS: Psycho Circus - The Nightmare Child

One of the most underrated FPS games of all times.
It has very unique characters and surroundings, how many games have enemies such as arachniclown (half spider, half clown)?
Gameplay also allows several different kinds of approaches, such as rushing with guns blazing or trying to snipe from a further distance. The four chapters each have their own unique feeling, based on the identity of the theme character (starchild, demon, spaceman, catman).

And if you happen to like KISS the world is full of KISS references and gags that will surely keep you trying to find each and every one of them.

Sadly the game is not for sale, I think, so second hand stores are the only way to get it legally.



Another game worth mentioning is Star Trek: Voyager - Elite Force.

As some reviewer nicely put it: they have turned a mediocre TV series into a fine game.
Things in the game fit into Star Trek world, and it helps to be familiar with them, but connections to the series are mostly minimal, so the game should be playable even with no previous knowledge of the series.

I have no idea if this game is still being sold somewhere. My guess is not being sold, but then again, GOG managed to get Star Trek games by Interplay, so it is possible in theory at least.



As a third suggestion I would recommend No One Lives Forever series, which is an undeniable classic of the genre. Funny spy parody in the spirit of the 60s with a female protagonist. What's there not to like?

whats not to like is that its hard to get and nearly impossible to get running on modern systems ?
at least there be ps2 versions

Yeah, it can be challenging, but then again if one wants to play games from that era, it could be worthwhile to have an old PC just for that. Should be practically speaking free to get one from some junk pile.

But yes, there is also the PS2 version of that. I actually have a free review copy of that, and it's mostly identical with the PC version, although IIRC there was some kind of different control scheme for DualShock controllers, as could be expected. I may be completely wrong, but think there was also some small chapter that the PC version didn't have, at least not originally.
Although it has been years since I have touched any of those, I can be thinking of a different game too...

Yeah I guess I have them on Steam too, due to some bundle. I'll have to check. Hopefully that also ends up to GOG at some point.

EDIT. Yeah, I seem to have that Revolution there too, I didn't even notice it had came there automatically. Next test I guess is whether SS Revolution is DRM-free...

Nevertheless, the originals (also on GOG) are still great too. :)

Oh, I thought this was only for FPS released on GOG. Since this isn't the case here, I'll add/echo the following to the list:

• Half-Life plus Opposing Force (you may want to check out Blue Shift too)
• Half-Life 2 plus it's two episodes
• No One Lives Forever
• Soldier of Fortune
• Halo: Combat Evolved
• Hexen
• Disruptor (PSX - you'll need emulation software)
• Alien Trilogy (PSX - emulation too)

Kingpin is my favorite from the era...you get to fight "The Jesus"- complete with Big Lebowski quotes and all. No one fucks with The Jesus. What more could you ask for?

Non GOG, then The Wheel of Time is a great one that no one bought. And if you include 3rd person games that play as FPS then American McGees Alice is the toughest shooter I've played, mainly due to the amount of platforming...hopefully on it's way to GOG soon with EA making a come back, I've no idea what happened to my CD.
