I know there were a lot of companies that did this back in the mid-2000s. Some sorta craze, I guess.
They were mostly card and board games. Chess was their claim to fame at one point in time.

Yes, but Yahoo's chess didn't require you to buy it. It was browser-based. Anyway, I thought this thread was about TinyE :P
