Hexen!
HeXen: Beyond Heretic comes from 1995 too!

Gabriel Knight 2 came out in 1995 along with the seminal Wipeout for the Playstation.

Finished Hexen last month, if you haven't played it already, get onto it!

I'm all for it with I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream, it's been in my backlog for too long so I guess now it's a perfect chance to give it a go ;)

also just wanted to add that it's a great idea, ciemnogrodzianin, i'm sure it will indeed help many of us with somewhat controlling the dusted backlog shelves!

Having a year or decade theme sale is a great idea too you know.

Welcome on board and thanks! But now I'm not so sure we will resolve the backlog problem this way.
I've already noticed some new (old) games to be played :D

Jagged Alliance was one of the best games of 1995, but is missing from the list.
I think we should switch up the year for time travel 02, it doesnt have to go chronologically, or does it?
Favourited the thread. Once I finish my current game (just started Shadowrun: Hong Kong), I'll look into picking a game for May.

ciemnogrodzianin: How good is this one? I've realised that for some unknown reason I was ignoring the game (and its sequel), even when it had a decent discount. Looking at 4.5/5 stars – it's worth trying.
It is a nice game(with some nice total recall style cutscenes, some nice levels, etc)...but it has one BIG flaw: very non standard controls that cannot(easily or maybe at all) be remapped......this means keys like J for jump, and other odd(imo) key choices.

(Also some stuff is hidden behind things one can destroy with their weapons, and doing so can take time...especially with things like containers.

Sidenote: be careful what ya sh00t in-game, as sometimes that can destroy things you might want to collect/use and it might also set off alarms)

Of course, I believe I heard not long ago that a port/etc was being done which included the ability to remap keys/controls. Might look into it soonish...if I remember to and do so then i'll keep ya posted. :)

Ok then ;D

ciemnogrodzianin: Sure it's fine! I think I should take this opportunity and also play this one :)

ciemnogrodzianin: I used this option a lot when playing a new Monkey Islands. It was great feature – with a single key you can switch the versions without even pausing a game – does it work the same in FT?
I believe so, yes....also it has concept art and commentary by the original dev team(unlocked via various in-game actions/etc).

I miss old school gaming mags...they had so much soul....unlike a chunk of the ones pushed out today.

Make sure to try all actions with everything....you get a bunch of nice/funny lines. :)
(not so much with inventory used on various things....which more often seems to give generic responses)

Also tip(maybe semi spoiler possibly): you'll have to sometimes run away from various situations/areas or hide....i'd recommend doing such things several times before completing those areas(you'll know em when ya see em), as the other characters & ben often give some nice lines when ya do.

GOG sure seems to be jumping the gun with release dates by a year. Either that or they knew someone with a time machine already back then and they got to play them a year early :)

According to MobyGames and Wikipedia [except for Pray for Death, which doesn't have a Wikipedia page so I checked other sources], out of that list, these ones were actually released in 1996:
- Afterlife
- Eradicator
- Jagged Alliance: Deadly Games
- Lighthouse: The Dark Being
- METAL SLUG
- Pajama Sam 1
- Pray for Death
- Titanic: Adventure Out of Time
- Wing Commander 4: The Price of Freedom

On the other hand, for Warhammer: Shadow of the Horned Rat it seems GOG has it right and MobyGames wrong, as other sources I checked agree on an initial Nov '95 release.

For Killing Time, the '95 release was indeed the initial one, but for 3DO, PC release was also '96.

As for Space Quest, yes, Space Quest 6 was released in '95.

Anyway, there's the Wikipedia listing for '95 to check out too... Ahem, Mobygames being useless for listing games by release year, since it lists any games that have any release in a given year, whether it's ports, rereleases, change of publisher, covermounts or what have you...

Hello fellow time travellers!

It is not too long ago that I had played through "Decent" again with its source port "D1x-rebirth".
That is why I would like to pick up another one, currently not listed by ciemnogrodzianin.

Others mentioned "Chrono Trigger", so I guess console releases from 1995 a valid as well!
Besides some of the now classic Japanese role playing or action-roleplaying games, the final quarter of the year 1995 had kept my younger self quite buisy with "Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island" and "Star Trek Starfleet Academy: Starship Bridge Simulator"--both on the SNES. (The attached pictures of their box covers are taken from ogdb.eu)

"Yoshi's Island" is an unusual Mario game where you play as Yoshi carrying little baby-Mario back to his parents.
It further distinguishes itself from other typical Mario platformers (jump 'n Runs) through its unique art design (as if it were drawn by hand using colored wax or chalk), and by the super annoying voiced cry of tiny baby-Mario each time you lose him until you recover or pick him up again. :p

The SNES version of "Starfleet Academy" was not only released earlier than its PC counter part, it wwas in my humble opinion also superior! Yes, the PC version brought us the (in)famous full motion videos with at least a couple of actual actors from the Star Trek show and motion pictures, but it does have a lack in mission design and solution alternatives for the missions.
On the SNES, I remember more varied mission objectives, approaches and results depending on your decisions/actions/performance, different playable ship classes (in the campaign ranging from the Oberth class to the Excelsior class, and in the simulator skirmish fights even klingon or romulan ships) are depicted with corresponding different bridges, and more variety in alien species and figures from the TV show which you encounter. All these aspects together had a bigger impact on delivering the actual Star Trek atmosphere than the novelty factor of the FMV with few in between guest appearances of real actors on the PC.
Also the pace and progress seemed to be faster in the SNES version.
The downside of the SNES version was, that its animation of the ships, space stations, planets and so on in a realtime 3D ploygon engine was quite slow, because the game did not featured the 'new' FX chip (which gave a significant performance boost to the meek 3D capabilities of the SNES, e.g. in "Stunt Race FX").

If we are speaking of gaming on the PC (MS DOS or Windows 95) on the other hand, then I might revisit "Fade to Black", which was released the same year, despite me knowing it only a year later in 1996 due to its port on the Playstation One. It is a direct sequel to "Flashback", retconing a couple of things and causing the release of an 'enhanced' CD-ROM edition of the original "Flashback" with newly 3D animated cut scenes in the same year. Unfortunately, the DOS version of "Fade to Black" is still missing here on GOG.com although we do have the "Flashback 25th Anniversary Edition"...

For the year 1995 I think that I am going to revisit "Star Trek Starfleet Academy: Starship Bridge Simulator" (SNES) to see how much of my memories are still correct and maybe comparing a bit with the PC version from the Federation Compilation and/or "Flashback" (but definitely not the 'enhanced' CD-ROM edition).
(1996 is going to be all about "Tomb Raider" versus "Fade to Black" in their Playstation incarnations!)

Enjoy your trip down memory lane!

Kind regards,
foxgog
